About this listen
The untold story of how the Vietnam War really began...
“Fantastic read. Couldn’t put it down. The author really did his homework.” Amazon Reviewer, 5 stars
A skilled and ruthless sniper kills to keep America free and his fellow soldiers safe. He is a breed apart. When the crosshairs of his rifle’s scope settle, a life ends. He doesn’t miss. Missing is for shavetails and greenhorns. He can survive for weeks in the harshest jungle. Silent and invisible, his prey never sees him coming and never hears the bullet that kills them.
But this assignment is different - an unknowing chance to prevent a war and save millions of lives. His mission - hunt down Ho Chi Minh, the merciless leader of a rebel army.
Based on actual historical events and real people A War Too Far is the true story of the elite OSS Deer Team and their daring operation in the mountains of North Vietnam near the end of World War II. A gut-wrenching tale of the unbreakable bond between brothers-in-arms, bravery beyond reason, and an astonishing betrayal that would alter the world forever.
A fact-based novel that reveals the real beginning of the Vietnam War and the first American soldiers to fight and die in the jungles of Vietnam.
A War Too Far is the first book in the highly acclaimed Airmen Series – historical novels that read like a modern political thriller, full of exciting action, and larger-than-life characters. Each book reveals unforgettable events leading up to and during the war that changed America forever.

Chief Petty Officer James "Patches" Watson was there at the start. One of the first to come out of the famed Underwater Demolition Team 21, he was an initial member—a "plank owner"—of America's deadliest and most elite fighting force, the U.S. Navy SEALs. Through three tours in the jungle hell of Vietnam, he walked the point—staying alert to trip wires, booby traps, and punji pits, guiding his squad of amphibious fighters on missions of rescue, reconnaissance, and demolition—confronting a war's unique terrors head-on, unprotected . . . and unafraid.

Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. He'd ride up on his white steed and break the curse I've been fated to carry since the day I was born. Funny how things changed over time, how the fairytale twisted into something far more crooked—and darker—than I ever imagined. In reality, my knight is scarred and broken, living alone in a castle of bones that overlooks the sea. He isn’t searching for me. He never was.

Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Story
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Story
Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

Shockingly well told . . . a tad confusing in that . . .
Shockingly well told . . . a tad confusing in that the writer did not easily differentiate between which character was speaking . . . “he said, she said” . . . I couldn’t stop listening to it! I hope there is a sequel to it that I am unaware of . . . I would relish a continuation of same . . . SKH

AI voice stinks
Virtual voice is terrible. I would not pay for a title that has AI voice telling the story.

Virtual voice nullification
The virtual voice took out anything positive I have to say. I gave it 45 minutes. That’s enough.

Disappointed
This is the first and last time I’ll knowingly listen to a virtual performance in audio books for the foreseeable future. This decision is based upon both principle and quality. I chose to do so this time, against my principles which prefer to support the actors, out of curiosity. The performance was not only lackluster but there were notable instances of mispronunciation, incorrect translation of abbreviations and contractions, lack of or misplaced emphasis, and mundane emotions. Such a disservice to the author and the otherwise well written story.
