Publisher's summary

When Fitzwilliam finds Lizzy waiting in his carriage with a pistol aimed at him, they quickly discover they both have a mutual problem. Their sisters’ indiscretions are being used by someone to extort their families, so they decide to work together to learn who is blackmailing them. At first, they argue and have nothing in common, but he starts to see more to Lizzy than her fine eyes. Fitzwilliam is falling in love with her, but she resists his efforts because he objects to Jane’s seemingly shallow affections for Bingley. How can he allow an ill-suited match for his friend even if withdrawing his objections is the only way he can convince Lizzy to let him court her? Can he sacrifice his own happiness for his friend’s sake?

A very enjoyable story!

A Wicked Scheme by Abbey North is an engaging mystery story of blackmail, family loyalty and love. Someone is blackmailing two families for the indiscretions of their daughters. Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy team up to protect their sisters uncover a blackmailer, and fall in love in the process. The narration by Julia Eve is wonderful. She brings an individual voice to each character and brings the story to life. I received a free copy if the audiobook for my honest review.

A clean P&P variation

Story: 3.5 stars

The plot is clever:

A blackmailer is loose and protecting Darcy and Elizabeth’s sister’s reputations is of paramount importance.

The two separately set out to find the blackmailer and that’s when they discover their families are both being blackmailed.

The author captures Lizzy’s independent nature and Darcy’s stiff formality, but none of the nuances that makes these two so beloved.

Lizzy’s independence isn’t balanced by her teasing humor. Plus, her risk-taking is downright foolhardy. She risks her own reputation as she tries to rescue her sister’s.

Darcy is harder to describe. He does come to have more empathy for the other young ladies victimized by Wickham, but he seems more like he’s been brow-beaten by Lizzie, into an admission, than inspired by her and his love for her.

It’s a good variation and not based on lust like so many others out there. I appreciated that the author was authentic in that she gave Lizzie the innocence of the era and Darcy is ready to wait for her to adjust to the idea of being courted.

Narration: 5 stars

I love Julia Eve and the atmosphere she evokes in through her voice acting! I’ve listened to a number of her books and am always thrilled to find another clean romance narrated by her!

A Lovely Variation!

Just how will Lizzy and Fitzwilliam manage to work together without tearing each other apart as they try to find their familys' blackmailer? Almost an impossible task, you say. Well, Abbey North found a way in her Pride and Prejudice variation.
Of course there are the arguments over silly issues but they manage to do what needs to be done and fall in love at the same time.
This is a nicely written story, short and to the point and beautifully read by Julia Eve.
Well worth listening to!
I listened to a promotional copy of the audiobook and my voluntary review is based on my unbiased thoughts about it.

interesting

An entertaining short mystery solved and love found by the end of it. There's something to be said for forced proximity and growing feelings. I enjoyed both main characters pluck and tenacity. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job bringing it to life
