Excellent Chekhov Story with Poor Narration

This is a very nice Chekhov story (but not one of my favorites). Like many of Chekhov’s short stories this story seems surprisingly modern in outlook, as if a modern author was writing about history. The writing is excellent and the story and characters interesting. I did not much care for the narration. I found the tone and tempo off-putting and there was a slight, but quite annoying, echo. Playing this at 1.5x speed made it quite a bit more tolerable. This was only 63 cents (not worth a full credit), so overall, it was worth it to me – but just barely.

A Wonderful Short Story, classic Chekhov!

This reading has to be one of the best I have heard of Chekhov which is not easy to interpret. John Willian Cawthorne is a great narrator but it's ashamed that he hasn't done more. Any one who enjoys classic Russian literature will enjoy this piece.
