About this listen

ANTEROS is the story of John Donnelly, a painter who at the age of eighty has been brought to Cannes by an arts foundation in Monaco to finalize arrangements for the endowment of his life's work in a permanent collection. Why he should have been chosen for such a privilege, after a life without fame and when his painting days are over, he cannot imagine and, as it is, Cannes is a place he would rather avoid. Not only was it there that as a young man he twice suffered the violent termination of a love relationship but more recently it was where his wife and son were staying when they died in an accident. As guest of the foundation in the Jardin d'Antéros Hotel in Cannes he quickly comes to recognize that something is amiss, that under the appearance of benign concern the foundation is well aware of the unhappy memories and associations Cannes has for him and is deliberately using them to upset and distress him. He suspects that he is being spied upon and when the harassment turns to taunting and mockery he realizes that his reactions are being filmed. It is as if he were enmeshed in a web woven from threads of his own life by some sadistic predator who takes pleasure in watching his confusion, his ignorance and uncertainty, amused at his growing apprehension of what in reality the generous patronage of the foundation conceals. Gradually and piecemeal the sinister truth emerges revealing unexpected facets to the painful events that happened to him in Cannes and in the years that followed and culminating in the bitter discovery of his own key part in the deaths of his wife and son. ANTEROS is about a man learning to live the end of his life, a psychological thriller as lyrical and elegiac in its development as it is tense and unpredictable.
