Publisher's summary

Jasper Lightner is a decorated Crimean War hero and the most admired inspector in London's Metropolitan Police. Along with a chest full of medals, he's got a head injury that's left large chunks of his memory missing. But Jasper's biggest problem is his father, the Duke of Kersey, who, enraged by a series of front-page newspaper stories extolling Jasper's exploits, decides he's had enough of the embarrassment and uses his political connections to keep his son out of the headlines - and off the police force.

Jasper is sent packing to New York City on a yearlong assignment to train detectives and discovers a police department hovering on the brink of armed conflict. Assigned to investigate the murder of philanthropist and reformer Stephen Finch, Jasper joins forces with a man who might be even more of an outsider than he is: Hieronymus Law, a detective who had investigated two almost identical killings - and who is rumored to have taken money to help frame an innocent woman for murder.

Law is bent on restoring his good name. But can Jasper trust Hy enough to bring him into the investigation? As the city devolves into madness and law enforcement falls into the hands of dangerous gangs, this unlikely team has no choice but to work together to pursue an adversary more sinister than either has faced alone.

New detective duo thats fabulous!

This book was amazing...the mystery intriguing and the characters endearing.. I absolutely love our detectives Jasper Lightner and Hy Law. looking forward to more books from SM Goodwin with these two. Rupert Degas is an exceptional narrator with a wonderful range for all the characters. This was my first book by him but won't be my last. hoping more listeners discover this gem.

Great book, great detail, thorough research in to details of the time and place. Great voice talent, able to capute the stutter and accents very well.

Her next book was better but this was quite good

Excellent narrator
Loved the main characters but would have wanted a bit more backstory on the valet.

Top Notch! Could not stop listening to this book

I purchased this audio book and started as many others, an evening listen to escape the chaos of the world and relax at the end the day. I had to reset the sleep timer once, .... twice. .... ok I had to give up and turn it off! Compelling story, engaging characters, fantastic narrator. This has the backbone of a backbone of a mainstream classic, yet the edgy intrigue of a alternative independent.

Good story, outstanding narration.

Rupert Degas.makes this story, set in 19th century New York, come alive. He does over a dozen distinct voices, all with different accents, intonations and pace.
