About this listen

Mick's adult life is not turning out the way he'd hoped. His twenties are over, and instead of being the acclaimed novelist and family man he thought he'd be, Mick is stuck running a second-rate California motel and fumbling through an endless succession of hilarious dating misadventures. Most of his friends are married with children, and he feels they look down upon single people like him as being merely a fraction of a whole being.

During his version of the modern single man's search for what completes him, Mick must contend with a cast of quirky and memorable characters that both frustrate and sustain him as he navigates his way toward having to make a momentous career decision that will affect all of their lives.

Accidental Adulthood is a coming-of-age story for the Tinder generation. As Mick begins to face up to his own flaws and struggles to ascertain his place in the adult world, some universal truths are illuminated about family, ambition, responsibility, loyalty, and relationships.

I love that the narration that does not peg his voice as originating from any particular area of the country. I like how his narration is downcast when the main character is disappointed and how the voice relays the guy’s happiness. The voice give authenticity to the story

The main character never stops trying to find his forever happiness

Maybe I was in the wrong mindframe to listen to this book, but I didn't find it amusing. I found the protagonist to not truly consider women as people. He had a truly awful view on women, and I just...I couldn't root for him to find a partner, because he wasn't even looking for a partner.

If this is what the average man is like, then God help society.

God, are all men this shallow and misogynistic?

Fairly fast paced and funny at times. A venture into a single person's mind, letting them control his actions.

A fun Adventure

Listening to Accidental Adulthood I get the sense that Jeff Gephart received steady inspiration from Douglas Adams, Tucker Max, and Larry Donner in crafting this hectic and hilarious story of Mick's attempts to find romantic companionship, manage a struggling business, and deal with the constant barrage of misguided good intentions from friends and family. With a timely tale rife with pop culture references and unexpected hi-jinks, we get to comfortably listen to, and laugh at, the awkward and uncomfortable situations that our story's hero must navigate while offering us a glimpse into his thoughts and frustrations. From witty dialogue to raunchy situations, this adventure will resonate with readers that have ever gone seeking a stable relationship and rewarding career. Dustin Pete's narration captures every interaction perfectly. [disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 1.75x]

I read this years ago, but had forgotten a lot of the details. This time around, I found the protagonist's overt sexism off-putting, but unfortunately quite accurate for a man of his generation. The ending redeemed the story for me, as it was clear that this was a character badly in need of growing up and evolving away from immature things like the misogyny society had taught him. It looks like he's finally headed in the right direction at the end, finally viewing women as actual people. The story contained lots of laughs and truths, and the supporting characters were a highlight for sure. Dustin Pete's voice and narration were perfect; somehow he made me truly care for Mick, despite his obvious flaws.

Thought provoking, and fun
