About this listen

George Eliot's first full-length novel Adam Bede is a profound rendering of 19th century English pastoral life. This timeless story of seduction and betrayal follows the virtuous carpenter Adam Bede, whose world is soon disrupted when the all-too-beautiful Hetty betrays him for another villager. Her actions precipitate a turmoil of tragic events that shake the very foundations of their serene rural community. Eliot's gift for leisurely and lyrical prose is in full effect here and her insight into human emotion and complexity is unrivalled.

Soul satisfied

It's a slow pace and yet when it was over I wanted wanted more. The reader is multi talented. I loved her authentic and lyrical delivery of the authors work.

Great narration

Didn’t think anybody could come close to Juliet Stevenson as a narrator, but this Georgina Sutton is marvelous!

Ghastly distortion of one character's voice

I've just started, and while the main narration is good, there's an unlistenable distortion in her performance of "Wiry Ben," to the point that if Wiry Ben returns in the next chapters, I may have to leave off listening.
It's as if the recording in his dialogue has been sped up to Alvin and the Chipmunks speed, though without any of their charm.
Did a producer do this deliberately? It sounds like a vandalization.

Good story but uneven narrator

The characters in this novel speak in very strong local dialect. While The narrator has a good handle on this, she voices some of the characters in a very irritating high-pitched way that was very unpleasant to listen to
