Publisher's summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Age of Enlightenment, then pay attention....

The life of an eminent scientist during the Scientific Revolution and the ensuing Enlightenment was not easy. Ambitious people were killed in the name of the Catholic Church for their scientific and philosophical works, which were often viewed as heretical.

Major figures of the Enlightenment period include Voltaire, Isaac Newton, John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, David Hume, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Adam Smith, Immanuel Kant, and Thomas Jefferson. These and many other great thinkers of the era influenced mass social upheaval in pursuit of equality and human rights, and many historians consider the culmination of these efforts to have been the French Revolution of 1789.

Wonderful History

Another wonderful history of science/philosophy by Gottlieb. I very much enjoyed The Age of Reason, and this audible is a continuation into the Enlightenment era. Gottlieb does a great job of once again charitably interpreting and explaining the philosophies of some of the thinkers of the Enlightenment, and of giving short biographies of them, as well.

Beautifully written, accesible

Beautifully written. I know that the primary sources would be too difficult for me to grasp. It's been a very long time since I had a philosophy class. Gottlieb makes these great thinkers/scientists accessible.

What a Terrific Listen!

Unless you're studying for an advanced degree in philosophy, I'm afraid listening to the stuff is much like panning for gold: a great deal of effort for a very occasional nugget of insight. But this audible - wow! You get inside the head of these revered icons via Gottlieb's narrative.

I enjoyed the audible

I have been indulging in Enlightenment history so this was another listen. It was a review of the key ideas that evolved from Descartes, Spinoza, and 18th century free thinkers. I have developed a political philosophy by listening and listening Enlightenment which is we are under siege by counter-revolutionaries and anti-modernists......I enjoyed the audible...not a difficult audible!

A broad education in an hour

Many Hourly History audibles can be obtained free. They are well-written and full of information. It is arguably a sin not to listen to them, improve ourselves, and be all that we can be. This volume tells how for centuries people were kept in ignorance.

Enlightening Audible

The author gives a concise history of philosophy from Descartes to Voltaire, by a circuitous route that includes Leibniz, Newton, Locke, Hume etc. He provides a good description of the periods these people lived in and the challenges they faced when trying to publish their work(s). The audible is enjoyable to listen and one wished that there was more to absorb from such an important period of history.

His writing is excellent, enjoyable

If this were a film, it might be called "auteur-driven." While measured, richly fact-filled and articulately insightful, you very much feel the author's presence in the audible, his perspective, his subjectivity. His writing is excellent, enjoyable, a real pleasure to listen.

Should Be Requred Listening In Schools

The information contained within and the references pointing to more substantial volumes encourages the listener to reach for a higher ideal in life. Not only does the listener feel encouraged to improve their lives, the listener is also shown how the way they live their lives can improve the lives of others in their communities, cultures, and even countries.

Great Overview

As a history buff I enjoyed the stories of the women during the Enlightenment Age. They are often ignored or denied their place, so this was a refreshing change.
