Critic reviews

"Few will escape the allure of the land and people [Michener] describes.... Alaska takes the reader on a journey through one of the bleakest, richest, most foreboding, and highly inviting territories in our Republic, if not the world.... The characters that Michener creates are bigger than life." ( Los Angeles Times Book Review)
"Always the master of exhaustive historical research, Michener tracks the settling of Alaska [in] vividly detailed scenes and well-developed characters." ( Boston Herald)
"Michener is still, sentence for sentence, writing's fastest attention grabber." ( The New York Times)

Enjoyable Story, Frustrating Narration

The book is good, enjoyable. I've learned several things about Alaska that I wasn't aware I should know. How a Coast Guard cutter and a college got their names and some towns too. Love it.
The narrator speaks very slowly, fixed that by speeding it up. But his pronouncing place names differently than WE pronounce them -I'm a Tlingit descendant, lifelong Alaskan makes me cringe. Yoon-Alaska instead of Un-Alaska. Ugh.

A Classic

I read this book with a book I think in the 90s to Hawaii which I also loved. I’ve been Hawaii 30 years and realized it was very accurate even though the names are changed and ventured into more Michener, always a commitment and well worth it. I’m heading out on an Alaskan cruise I realized I wanted to brush up on Alaskan history and listened this time to the 57 hours and again feel better educated for it as well as my cruise. Anyone with a curiosity or love of Alaska, are going on a cruise should read this book it will stay with you forever!

excellant history

Would you listen to Alaska again? Why?

I travelled for months in Alaska and the Yukon this summer. The history depicted in this book helped me understand more about the area.
As I traveled the area many of the characters in the book have historical influence to this day on the area.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Alaska?

Being able to connect the characters in the book to the regions in the area.

Have you listened to any of Larry McKeever’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

heavens no this was a long book that I listened to on my 18000 mile driving journey.

Any additional comments?

na

I treasured this succulent tale

The story had so many fabulous characters. I will miss them as friends. I relished this book through many long nights of insomnia. Never will there be another so rich in detail and characters. Farewell
