Publisher's summary

From the award-winning author of Melissa, a phenomenal story about queerness past, present, and future.

Sam is very in touch with their own queer identity. They're nonbinary, and their best friend, TJ, is nonbinary as well. Sam's family is very cool with it... as long as Sam remembers that nonbinary kids are also required to clean their rooms, do their homework, and try not to antagonize their teachers too much. The teacher-respect thing is hard when it comes to Sam’s history class, because their teacher seems to believe that only Dead Straight Cis White Men are responsible for history. When Sam’s home borough of Staten Island opens up a contest for a new statue, Sam finds the perfect non-DSCWM subject: photographer Alice Austen, whose house has been turned into a museum, and who lived with a female partner for decades. Soon, Sam's project isn't just about winning the contest. It's about discovering a rich queer history that Sam's a part of—a queer history that no longer needs to be quiet, as long as there are kids like Sam and TJ to stand up for it.

Critic reviews

"Author Alex Gino narrates their newest middle-grade audiobook with cheerful vivacity.... Gino's voicing of Sam is charmingly authentic--the perfect preteen mix of sweetness and stubbornness. Sam's every quicksilver change of feeling is apparent in their tone. Gino also creates an array of engaging character voices for Sam's family, both real and found, and their pedantic history teacher." (AudioFile)

Dear Listener,

What inspired me to write this story?
"Like Sam, the main character of Alice Austen Lived Here, I grew up on Staten Island, in sight of the Statue of Liberty. And like Sam, I walked to the library and took the city bus to school. But unlike me, Sam knows they are queer and nonbinary, and is supported by their friends and family. I didn't learn that Alice Austen was part of the rainbow that makes up queer history until I was independently researching for signs of LGBTQIAP+ folk in the past and came across the name of someone I'd only known as a local photographer. I want to provide the type of entryway into the rich world of LGBTQIAP+ history, culture, and chosen family that I didn't see growing up. In some ways, I wrote how I wish my childhood had been, though it is very much a contemporary book. We have always been here. I hope readers enjoy spending time with Sam and their people." – Alex Gino, writer of Alice Austen Lived Here

More family-friendly queer literature by Alex Gino!

This is literally THE most wholesome LGBT+ book that I've EVER read, and very educational about queer history too! I'd strongly recommend it to any queer person, ally, or person interested in LGBT history or social issues of middle-school age or higher. As an excellent bonus, this audio presentation is also read by the author... 👍

Great children's book

Adults will love it too but I really could have used a book like this when I was young. Queer protagonist stories are hard to find and even rarer for having a happy ending.

nabor was kinda creepy.

I Love seeing how Gino went from toned down in their origanal book to feeling comfortable with broadining what they talk about from abilism to fat activism but the book kinda missed the mark. In writing it just kinda did the next problem aside.

A very weird detail I think is the main charecters relationship with there nabor ,thogh she seemed to do it without creepy intention she changed her shirt in front of a child but told them they didnt have to look, this was so the main charecter could get used to fat bodies but evan so. Also the belly bumps (its a high five for bellys they two did)weirded some People out but for me not as much. it also were phrases like abilist and fat activism that could have had better definitions. Also Audrey Lorde mught have been a better figure.( she was in the contest un not just pulling that out of thin air)
