About this listen
A fanciful tale by Andre Norton of a woman, her cat, and a down on his luck space traveler. Many had tried to rescue the treasure aboard a derelict floating in space, but few returned, and those that did weren't about to talk about it. Bat the cat can see things that humans can't, and he sees the unseen aboard the mystery ship. Travel along as Mike Vendetti takes us into the past, the 1950s, and visit their view of the future.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Story
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Atmospheric short from the Grand Dame of sci fi.
Entertaining very short piece from the 1950’s. In classic Norton style, there is a cat, jewels, a reserved but perceptive woman, and exotic space danger. I have a feeling the conventional post-climax ending was mandated by the magazine editors of the day.

Andre Norton: The Best of Sci-Fi
If you could sum up All Cats are Grey in three words, what would they be?
Worlds best sci-fi short story writer!
What was one of the most memorable moments of All Cats are Grey?
The heroine, Steena, is the classic misfit. A combination of geek, nerd and loner.
What does Mike Vendetti bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The slightly gravelly voice of Mike Vendetti improved the already stellar short story by adding a mystery detective novel air.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Any additional comments?
Only drawback? Andre Norton was such an incredibly talented writer, her short stories leave you begging for more!
