Joe Namath
About this listen
The NFL icon who first brought show business to sports shares his life lessons on fame, fatherhood, and football.
Three days before the 1969 Super Bowl, Joe Namath promised the nation that he would lead the New York Jets to an 18-point underdog victory against the seemingly invincible Baltimore Colts. When the final whistle blew, that promise had been kept. Namath was instantly heralded as a gridiron god, while his rugged good looks, progressive views on race, and boyish charm quickly transformed him - in an era of raucous rebellion, shifting social norms, and political upheaval - into both a bona fide celebrity and a symbol of the commercialization of pro sports. By 26, with a championship title under his belt, he was quite simply the most famous athlete alive.
Although his legacy has long been cemented in the history books, beneath the eccentric yet charismatic personality was a player plagued by injury and addiction, both sex and substance. When failing knees permanently derailed his career, he turned to Hollywood and endorsements, not to mention a tumultuous marriage and fleeting bouts of sobriety, to try and find purpose. Now 74, Namath is ready to open up, brilliantly using the four quarters of Super Bowl III as the narrative backbone to a life that was anything but charmed. As much about football and fame as about addiction, fatherhood, and coming to terms with our own mortality, All the Way finally reveals the man behind the icon.

Hall of Fame football coach Jimmy Johnson’s house isn’t on the way to anything. Yet, his private sanctuary on the Florida Keys’ Islamorada islands is a popular destination to which college and professional coaches, general managers, and team owners regularly trek to seek advice—how to build a positive team culture, draft elite players, balance work and family life, and lead a team to win. Why? Because Jimmy Johnson has done it all. Now, written with sports journalist Dave Hyde, Johnson shares a candid account of his life experiences that have turned him into a legend in the coaching world.

Pete Rose was a legend on the field. As baseball’s hit king, he shattered records that were thought to be unbreakable. And during the 1970s, he was the leader of the Big Red Machine, the Cincinnati Reds team that dominated the game. But he’s also the greatest player who may never enter the Hall of Fame because of his lifetime ban from the sport. Perhaps no other ballplayer’s story is so representative of the triumphs and tragedies of our national pastime.

From the mid-1980s into the early 1990s, the greatest athlete of all time streaked across American sports and popular culture. Stadiums struggled to contain him. Clocks failed to capture his speed. His strength was legendary. His power unmatched. Video game makers turned him into an invincible character—and they were dead-on. He climbed (and walked across) walls, splintered baseball bats over his knee, turned oncoming tacklers into ground meat.

Critic reviews
"Even casual sports fans will find this an enthralling read. For all his flaws—and the author does not hide them - Namath is a likable and lively raconteur. What's more, his is a remarkable life. He not only beat the Colts, he whooped alcoholism, evolved into a doting grandfather and endures the many side affects of gridiron fame with nary a complaint."—USA Today
"I have read everything about Namath for years....But this new book is different, better than all of the ones before it in a sense. All the Way: My Life in Four Quarters is told in Namath's words. And those words are powerful and instructive.—Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
"A pleasure for fans who remember way back to Namath's glory days-and an entertainment for those who are new to the gridiron hero."—Kirkus

A book that explores the enduring legends of Snake, Foo, Dr. Death, and John Madden's Oakland Raiders, Badasses is the definitive biography of arguably the last team to play old-fashioned tough-guy football. Peter Richmond, co-author of the New York Times best seller The Glory Game, offers a fascinating look at the 1970s Oakland Raiders, led by colorful greats from another era.

In the history of modern sport, there have never been two high-level teammates who loathed each other the way Shaquille O’Neal loathed Kobe Bryant and Kobe Bryant loathed Shaquille O’Neal. From public sniping and sparring, to physical altercations and the repeated threats of trade, it was warfare. And yet, despite eight years of infighting and hostility, by turns mediated and encouraged by coach Phil Jackson, the Shaq-Kobe duo resulted in one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.

Story
On December 28, 1958, the New York Giants and Baltimore Colts met under the lights of Yankee Stadium for that season's NFL Championship game. Football was still greatly over-shadowed by the country's favored pastime - baseball - but the 1958 championship proved to be the turning point for pro football.
On the field and roaming the sidelines were 17 future Hall of Famers, including Colts stars Johnny Unitas, Raymond Berry, and Gino Marchetti, and Giants greats Frank Gifford, Sam Huff, and assistant coaches Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry.
The Best Game Ever is a brilliant portrait of how a single game changed the history of American sports.

Thank you Joe Namath!!
I’ve always wanted to meet Joe Namath ever since I read a book that my dad gave me about him. I was probably only nine or 10 years old back in the early 70’s, I’m 57 now. My family is Hungarian, and I think my dad wanted me to see that being Hungarian was something to be proud of and celebrated. Joe Namath has been my hero ever since.
Listening to this book in Joe’s voice kind of felt like I did meet him, and that we were having the coolest conversation ever. Thanks Joe!!

I loved this book especially that Joe himself read it. I could feel his emotion in every word he spoke. As a huge Joe fan since the beginning to hear him tell his story in his own voice was very moving and powerful and super enjoyable. Thanks Joe !!

What a Guy!
I really, really, really do not like football. I thought this book was going to be a personal account of the life of Joe Namath but it was all about football. Totally about football. And I enjoyed it!! Mikey liked it!!
I didn't understand most of the terminology but I loved listening to JN talk about it in his own voice. He has a interesting accent and cadence that made this book fun. Also see him in a different light. He's just a good ol' boy with incredible talent. And he has very white teeth! I can appreciate those pretty teeth!

EVERY JOE NAMATH FAN WILL LOVE THIS BOOK
THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!
I AM A JOE NAMATH FAN AND THIS BOOK REMINDS ME OF THE JET YEARS WHEN JOE WAS QB.
WHAT MAKES IT BETTER IS JOE READS THE BOOK. HIS VOICE SOUNDS JUST THE SAME AS IT DID 50 YEARS AGO,
I ESPECIALLY AGREE THAT THE OAKLAND RAIDERS WERE DIRTY PLAYERS!
MANY PERSONAL LITTLE STORIES ABOUT HIS LIFE AS WELL AS A LOT ABOUT FOOTBALL.
A MUST READ FOR JET FANS. IF YOU ARE TOO YOUNG TO KNOW WHO JOE IS YOU SHOULD "READ" IT ANYWAY.

This is a great listen!
I highly recommend it for anyone who loves football and football history, appreciated what The Jets (and thereby, the AFL) accomplished in Super Bowl III, roots for the underdog, loved the period of the late sixties in American lifestyle and popular culture and Broadway Joe's celebrated role in it, or wants to learn more about these things, as well as learn more about Joe's life story. Eloquently written, as well as narrated, by the man himself, in his unique style, this audiobook is a lot of fun.

A larger than life guy
Joe was a larger than life guy. This book is well narrated by Joe himself and he does a good job. He basically walks you through his self predicted Super Bowl win and while he's recounting the game he takes you back to his early football career how he got there. I enjoyed his story and his candidness on everything from his inability to serve in Vietnam and views on others service to his alcoholism. Overall its a good book.
