About this listen

From the bestselling author of A Pledge of Silence comes a story of resistance, intrigue, and risking it all in the WWII Philippines.

December 1941. War has erupted in the Pacific, spelling danger for Gina Capelli Thorpe, an American expat living in Manila. When the Japanese invade and her husband goes missing, Gina flees with her daughter to the Zambales Mountains to avoid capture - or worse.

Desperate for money, medicine, and guns, the resistance recruits Gina to join their underground army and smuggles her back to Manila. There, she forges a new identity and opens a nightclub, where seductive beauties sing, dance, and tease secrets out of high-ranking Japanese officers while the wildly successful club and its enemy patrons help fund the resistance.

But operating undercover in the spotlight has Gina struggling to stay a step ahead of the Japanese. She’s risked everything to take a stand, but her club is a house of cards in the eye of a storm. Can Gina keep this delicate operation running long enough to outlast the enemy, or is she on a sure path to defeat that will put her family, her freedom, or even her life at risk?

So hard to read how savage and cruel the Japanese were. Horrible. There is no logical reason for any of it.

a wonderful book of a person journey.

It was an easy listen. Perhaps a bit predictable, but well written. The narrator did a good job.

Good. Not amazing, but solid.

I was horrified by the way that people suffered this was a reminder that the way people were suffering at the hands of others . I do not think we have learned yet. Good story well I reading.

Wonderful story that gives light to WWll. Heart breaking but realistic. It shows how little we need to survive and how we DO survive.

Amazing

I have always loved World War II fictions and non-fictions, but I’ve never read a storyline quite like this, as I’ve really never much considered the extent of the war fought in the Philippines. This was such a riveting and inspirational story that gave such detail I could picture every scene, and also gave me more knowledge on what went on in the Philippines with the US and Japan during WWII. Would highly recommend!

Vibrant, Riveting, Thought-provoking

The story of Manila and the Philippines from 1941-1945 under Japanese occupation. Specifically it is the story of two women and how they lived trying to get supplies, protecting their children, and yes, even aiding the guerillas. Although a work of historical fiction, I found it to be very accurate, even if glossed over for the sake of brevity. Nicely done, Ms. Solomon! The reader was a bit breathy, but not distractingly so.

Very Accurate Work of Historical Fiction

Tried a couple times to listen but couldn't get through the first chapter. After I finally made it through, I couldn't stop listening.

slow start but stick with it!

This book was well written by Flora Solomon and superbly performed by Sarah Mollo- Christensen.
I can reccomend both writer and performer and would wish for more books like this from these two women.

Riveting WWII Story

A wonderful story beautifully narrated. I enjoyed the historical viewpoint. So many places and people were changed by WW2. I feel we shouldn’t be judgemental about the past, hopefully we can learn from it.

A truly beautiful listening experience

I knew very little about this time in history. Loved that it was told by a woman and wasn't exactly a war book told from the middle of the action, rather how this war in this area affected people and friends and families and their lives.

Gripping!
