About this listen

Amanita reached into her jacket and prised the letter from between her iPod and her headphones. She gazed at the writing on the front for a moment. It’s eloquent loops and scrawl communicating her father’s handwriting style - something she had never known before. Then she opened it.

Amanita Walmer never knew her father, the renowned botanist Dr Virgil Walmer. But through her growing independence during her first year at university, she comes to understand the man whose daughter she will always be.

In this eloquent exploration of burgeoning independence, Amanita Walmer and the Amberleigh Flower portrays what it is like to leave home for the first time, the strains put on friendships that were once thought eternal, and the lasting marks of an unknown fatherhood.

As I listened I had no idea that we were hearing from two different timeframes, and I was very confused at the differing rates of time where a month would pass in one story line but only hours in the other.

The author explains complex philosophical ideas in the school scenes with ease and picks his words thoughtfully.

Female characters tend to have illogical and rambling train of thought perspectives where males have a logical and easier to follow point of view.

lovely prose, a bit confusing

A deep backstory and large cast of characters seem overwhelming at first, but quickly the characters become distinctive, each with their own voice, and this story, more than a generation in the telling, proceeds at a breakneck speed.

Multiple narrative skeins weave a rich tapestry

I found it to be different from, what I normally read. but turned out to be a really good book. this Book drawled me in from the beginning.. when your life begins and your father passes before you even been born . the world of many things to happen .

I enjoyed this book a lot, even though it’s not my usual reading preference. The story is well told, the characters are well developed and intriguing, and the narrator had a very soothing voice. Overall, I recommend this book.

Did the story keep me engaged: reasonably
Was there anything I found annoying: part of my challenge with this author are the change in timelines and/or flashbacks in this series - sometimes i get lost. I wish there was some kind of identifier in the audio before it happened.
Would I listen to this title again: maybe
Comments: The story explores the transition from teenage girl to young woman with its challenges and choices. Well paced plot with interesting characters. Hanna Williamson's narration enhanced the audio experience.

Found it hard to follow this book. The growth of the story was there, but there was no excitement. A generation gap me thinks. Author and the narrator did a great job, it was me.
