About this listen

It was an idyllic summer. Until they had to escape.

France, 1943.

Forced to flee war ravaged Poland, Sara and her parents are offered refuge in a beautiful but dilapidated house in the French Alps. It seems the perfect hideaway, despite haunting traces of the previous occupants who left in haste. But shadows soon fall over Sara's blissful summer and her blossoming romance with local villager Alain. As the Nazis close in, the family is forced to make a harrowing choice that could drive them apart forever, while Sara's own bid for freedom risks several lives.

Will Sara be reunited with those she loves? And can she ever find her way back to Alain?

By turns poignant and atmospheric, this is the compelling novel from Sunday Times best-selling author Carol Drinkwater about the power of first love and courage in our darkest hours.

I would like to give 5 stars but can’t because of the first 10 or so chapters

I am glad I stayed with the Audible but the first part of book was a waste of my time and I was getting irritated. It had some good info but the rest was teenage immature angst. So much repetition I knew it wasn’t for me. Glad I didn’t. When it did take off it was so good Main character turned out to be wise beyond her years. Was a quick thinker and took action. I came to really admire her

A Stand-out

I’m listening to this and finding it mesmerizing! The author is the narrator, as seems to be the case with all her books. An Anglo Irish actress, she has superb delivery and the story itself is intoxicating. I have enjoyed so many WWII stories, but this is a true winner! I love knowing that the inspiration came from an actual series of events! Poignant, suspenseful, picturesque – so many images come to light as I see in my mind’s eye the lovely French village, the occupying Italians, the various townspeople with their secrets and their quiet heroism. Themes of suspense, incredible courage, young love, and coming of age ripple throughout. No doubt this fabulous novel will continue to haunt me long after I have reluctantly reached the end!

Great Book

I loved this book, however, the author should not have narrated it. The main character is a 17 year old girl, where as the author is an old woman. I just couldn't get the image of an old lady playing the main character and not a 17 year old girl. Not to mention the narrator pronounced several words incorrectly. I did like the story, cried at the ending and if I had to do it again I would read this instead of listening.
