  • Carthage’s massive harbor that welcomed fleets from across the Mediterranean
  • How farmers of the Garamantes thrived deep in the Sahara
  • The rise of powerful Berber kingdoms in North Africa
  • Why King Ezana of Axum transformed his empire through faith
  • And much, much more!

I chose this book because I wanted to learn more about African history beyond what I grew up hearing. It brought to life stories and facts about early civilizations that I didn’t know existed. The book made me appreciate the depth and strength of African culture in a way I hadn’t before.

I picked this up wanting to fill in some serious gaps from school and wow, it delivered. So many names, places, and inventions I’d never heard about, all laid out in a way that actually sticks. It didn’t feel like a textbook, just solid stories that gave me a whole new respect for African history. I even found myself rereading parts just to let it all sink in. If you’ve ever felt like history left something out, give this a shot.

These stories should be known by the world. It’s not normal we know basically nothing about the history of a whole continent. I learned many valuable things and I hope many will too!

Incredibly interesting!

As a former middle school teacher, my biggest frustration was how much incredible history gets left on the cutting room floor. We’d cover Egypt, then poof, the curriculum would leapfrog over the rest of the continent as if nothing else happened for a thousand years. This book fills in those massive, fascinating gaps. I put this on while tackling the disaster zone that is my garage, and my jaw just about hit the floor when I learned that ancient Nubia had more pyramids than Egypt—a fact that somehow escaped my entire education. The stories of powerful Berber kingdoms and the clever Garamantes farmers who thrived in the Sahara are the kinds of details that would have absolutely captivated my old students. Colin Fluxman narrates with this steady, engaging tone that makes complex histories feel like you're listening to a top-tier documentary, never once becoming dry or academic. I’m recommending this to my recently retired father who loves a good historical deep dive, and especially to anyone with curious kids who deserve a much fuller picture of the ancient world.

I found this book to be full of information that I was not aware of, i am one of those people who mostly thinks of egypt when it comes to historical african civilizations. This book goes much deeper into other cultures and civilizations on the continent which is something i was delighted to realize I needed. Would recommend!

This transported me. I didn’t expect to be so drawn in, but the way it brought ancient cities and leaders to life kept me completely engaged. There’s a warmth and dignity in the way these histories are told, and it helped me connect the dots between ancient African innovation and today’s world. It challenges a lot of assumptions, and for me, it restored a part of history that’s often overlooked or misrepresented. I listened during my commute, but now I want a hard copy just to revisit specific sections again.

I didn’t realize how many amazing things African civilizations made and did in history. The parts about the Nok people’s tools and the mysterious land of Punt caught my attention the most. The audiobook was easy to listen to and made history feel exciting. It changed the way I see ancient Africa and I enjoyed learning new facts.

This audiobook shares stories and history about Ancient Africa. I had never been taught this until I bought this audiobook. I learned a little about the ancient hunters, the Nok civilization, and how they lived their lives in times when we did not have advanced technology. There may be a few things in the bible that I read that are not in this audiobook, as well as in the Book of Mormon. I've seen similar stories on YouTube that discuss this topic, but this audiobook delves deeper than the pyramids of Giza. It’s an interesting story, and the narrator best fits this book.

Really glad I gave this one a chance—it’s definitely worth the listen.
