About this listen

Join award-winning historian Christopher Bellitto on this gripping journey through centuries of Greek history.

Ancient Greece was one of the most fertile civilizations in history, and its influence on Western philosophy, theology, and civilization is undeniable. Now, you can discover the fascinating legacy of ancient Greece through entertaining and enlightening lectures.

With Prof. Bellitto, you will gain a deeper understanding of what made ancient Greece so unique: its polis and democracy, its great battles and personalities, its soaring artistic and literary achievements. You'll also explore dark corners of this civilization, such as its treatment of women and slaves. You will travel from the walls of Troy to the theatres of Athens, from the Delphic oracle to the Spartans' stand at Thermopylae, from Socrates' trial and Alexander the Great's long journeys to the moment where Rome conquered Greece.

You'll begin by asking where ancient Greece fits on a broad canvas of world history, geography, and chronology viewed from a wide-angle lens. You will move forward in time, stopping often to explore closely important moments, topics, and themes. You will cover the most essential events in ancient Greece as you travel through millennia of history.

Join Prof. Bellitto on this fascinating journey today.

History presented in a clear, story teller fashion

Loved Bellito's voice and the comparisons to events from present day. Made it much easier to put myself in ancient Greece.

Fun and super interesting!

I could listen to this author all day. It is written in a very entertaining way yet it gives such insight and context about what and why things happened in Ancient Greece. I really enjoyed listening to this book while visiting Greece. It was like seeing the ancient sites in VR as I could now imagine what had gone on at these iconic landmarks. Great book! I want more :)

The way history should be taught

Great course. Professor Bellitto clearly has a knack for teaching. This course provides a broad overview of the Ancient Greek world and its many contributions to civilization. I appreciated the many ways in which Bellitto explained the big picture - economic, social, religious, etc. - while illustrating his points with the stories of real people. Frankly, it's a pleasure to learn when the presentation is fun. Full of good stories. I highly recommend this series.

Simple and accessible way to leave a solid foundation

Great starting point to break into the study of Ancient Greece. Targeted for an American audience with helpful parallels, but also clears up misconceptions for a more mature understanding.

Download this one

Most history books just recite fact, not this one. Bellitto is able to tell a story that shifts your frame of reference. Best history class I have ever taken.
