About this listen

Read by the author for his son, nephew, godson, and any child who needs a laugh.

It has been six months since the first freshman class of humans began at the new post-intergraded galactic military high school. Life comes at you fast, and the human girl Karel is trying to get her life back to normal with her shy, but gifted Nipon Alien boyfriend, Francis. The talented artistic Hankuk girl, Nichol, is now playing double role as Karel’s new housemate, and the muse of her athletic Zhongguo boyfriend, Kenny. It’s not all love and teenage romance here, as a new mystery quickly befalls the group. They will have to be fast, as another Detective Club at their school seems dead-set on stealing the spotlight. There’s a space cat too, but she’s less cool than the space dog. At least according to focus group of our space dog…named Space Dog. He was the only one willing to work for the fee we offered.

“Thucydides Galactic Imperial Military High School Detective and Mystery Club with a Space Dog: And a Space Cat Because, You Know, Sequels” is an upper middle grade, science fiction novel which is the second of the “Space Dog” trilogy. Yes, trying to pronouncing the name is part of the joke! It’s less funny when I have to explain it like that, dummy…

In the neon-colored capital planet of Chigu, the Detective and Mystery Club are facing their greatest threat yet: the Mystery and Detective Club! These new rivals will force our crew to fix their own personal issues, work together as a team, and maybe discover that no one is what they seem on the surface. Love, intrigue, mystery, and space cats! What more could you ask for! Oh, and homework too. These empires are not going to conquer the stars by themselves, after all!

Just like the first one, Space Cat uses a Sci-fi High School romance setting to really talk about family, culture, and international relations: specifically how and why countries have alliances. Working it into the plot and character growth helped, as did having them all still growing and dealing with their issues from the previous book. That does mean you can't really start with this one, though.

The themes of empathy and everyone being the support characters for eachother's stories is very much continued from the first. The perspective shifts really do help flesh out the relationships, with this getting a unique shift towards the end of the book.

Humor was still very much directed at a middle grade audience, so your mileage may vary, but it does have a few more serious moments than the first book. I think 12+ may be the appropriate age rating, depending on the child.

I will note that the author seems much more comfortable with the reading and the quality has improved, likely from just more experience. A more enjoyable listening experience than the first.

A sequel that builds on both it's themes and characters
