Publisher's summary

My name is Darcy Anderson, and I am cursed with a dark power: Whenever my life is in danger, something inside me summons elemental fire to protect me. I cannot control this.

One night, I was attacked in my home. The fire...it raged out of control. I survived the inferno, but my house burned to the ground - with my parents inside. I was at a loss to explain to the courts what happened, and they sent me to prison for 10 years for manslaughter. Now I'm out on parole, and all I want is to return to my home town and rebuild my life; but the man who attacked me is back to finish the job he started.

I can sense the power in me growing. If I can't control it, it will control me and destroy everything - and everyone - I love.

Fire Starter - Gift or Curse

Angel Fire begins with Darcy Anderson being released from prison and putted on parole. After serving her ten years sentence for manslaughter of burning both her parents, Darcy returned to her small town, Middleton. Darcy wanted to put the past behind her except her ex-husband and the Sheriff refused to allow her.

The town of Middleton remembered Darcy for setting the house on fire while her parent was in the house. The thing is Darcy knew that she didn't set the house on fire by common means and she knew that the fire started when she became upset. Even the evidences do not support how the fire is started except that it pointed to something supernatural and unorthodox. When politics and public opinion matters, Darcy did get the blunt end of the stick.

With the help of the new Fire Chief and the dairy of her grandmother, Darcy discovered the secret behind her ability and that there might be others like her.

Angel Fire is more of a YA story then the regular paranormal story. The way the story is written, Darcy sounded much younger than being a twenty-five years adult. The way the story end is similar to Fire Starter by Stephen King except the ending takes on a different path. Angel Fire is just the beginning of Darcy's journey.

Readers/Listeners would think that Angel Fire would resolve itself except the ending is not what seems. Just keep in mind that when there is an ex and the Sheriff who is the father of her ex, things are not going to resolve itself and end well.

The narrator, Suzanne Cerreta does a very good performance in narrating the story. After all, she is narrating from Darcy's point of view and the events that are happening to her after she is placed on parole.

Very Entertaining Story, Great Performance

I really enjoyed this book and I was surprised by the supernatural element to it. I don't generally pay much attention to the genre of a book before I listen to it, so i didn't realize this was a book about supernatural people. What I really enjoyed about the story was the slow start. It was enough to keep you interested early on, but it only hints at the supernatural abilities of the character.

As the story progresses the author builds the characters very well. I was constantly engaged in the story and even thought about it when I wasn't listening to it, to me that is always the sign of a captivating story. The love story that develops is not over the top and the relationships with the other characters feel real. I don't want to give up too much, but there are tragedies that occur throughout the story that will surprise you.

The performance was top notch, a female reader sometimes has difficulties doing male voices (and vice versa) but I liked that the reader did not try too hard to go for the deep voice on male characters. Her inflections were very good and I never felt annoyed by her intonations as I do with some performers.

Overall the book is a solid 4-4.5 and the performance was a 5 for me. At some point I will get into the other two books as I am excited to find out what happens to the main character.

One more thing I liked was the subtle use of religion i.e.. did the characters powers come from God, but you didn't get the feeling that the book had a religious lean, only that the natural thoughts of a normal person who finds she has these supernatural powers would be that they either came from God or the Devil.

Angel Fire

Any additional comments?

This seemed to take a long time to get to the point, and I found it depressing. It is well written and it is simply my patience and my mood that wasn't up for it.I hope book 2 will be better.

Great concept but the story didn't work for me

Any additional comments?

This review contains spoilers.

Angel Fire has a really interesting concept - girl with the power of fire inside her loses her parents and now has to learn to function and control her ability before others get hurt. Let's start with the positives. I really liked Darcy at first. She had purpose and was being strong and trying to overcome the past and move forward with her life. I really liked Neil because he was supportive, protective, and a real gentleman. Uncle Edward was quite difficult in his ornery ways, but he did the right things when it counted. Aunt Martha was very hospitable and always on Darcy's side. I also enjoyed the audio and think the narrator did a good job bringing life to each character.

But let's move on to the things I didn't care for as much. Darcy feels like she is completely alone in this, and yet in the span of a few days she has 3 people who already know about her situation and have experienced or heard about this ability she has. Convenient (but not coincidental) was Neil arriving in town just as Darcy did. Darcy's ex-husband and ex-father-in-law are just bullies who are useless human beings. At least they got what they deserved in a way.

But what upsets me the most in this book is that there is no positive. There is no redemption for Darcy, there is no overcoming all her issues. There is only the "I am useless and now everyone is dead because of me" let down at the end of the book. In hindsight, this is definitely one of those read the reviews before requesting the book for review type of situations. Others have complained about this as well. This ending definitely did not work for me. I'm all for a painful journey with loss and grief if that helps a character develop into someone kick-ass and strong, but that did not happen. Darcy felt stronger to me at the beginning of the book. I realize this is a series, but this first book did not entice me to continue to see if she finally does get her redemption.

I really enjoyed this book

Where does Angel Fire rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It ranks somewhere in the middle.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I wouldn't have killed off the main characters at the end of the book. I was really enjoying this book and looking forward to the 2nd in the series till it got to the end of the book.

What does Suzanne Cerreta bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ms. Cerreta really brought each of the characters to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending of the book really upset me and made me question wether or not I would continue listening to this series.
