About this listen

Exhausted and disillusioned with the world of theater in May 1935, Josephine Tey has traveled to Cornwall to spend the summer with her friends, the Motleys, at their run-down but beautiful country estate. Ready to begin work on her second mystery novel, Tey finds much to inspire her in the landscape and its legends. Meanwhile, the Motleys have become involved in an amateur production at the nearby Minack Theater. Detective Inspector Archie Penrose has returned to his roots in Cornwall to attend the funeral of a family friend, a young estate worker who died in a tragic riding accident. Penrose has a few questions about the circumstances surrounding the fatal occurrence. And when the Minack Theater proves to be the stage for a real-life tragedy, Penrose and Tey together must investigate an audacious murder and confront an evil suggesting that there are darker things than death.

Good but...

Troubling subject matter but an interesting story. I enjoy the writing in this series and Davina Porter's narration is perfect. I have mixed emotions about Josephine, though. I like Archie and I wonder where this relationship is going.

I'll listen to the next book and will have to consider moving on with series after that.

Tough

This is was a tough one. In addition to murder there was a lot of terrible crimes held in shadows. Also seems like acceptance of some.

Narration marvelous as usual

A surprise at every turn

This is a wonderful book. As a rule, I love Josephine Tey and Arthur Primrose.
They make a good pair, as do the author-Nicola Upson and the narrator-Davina Porter.
They keep the suspense at a maximum level and keep you guessing at every turn.

Good Story telling

This was a well written story. I wonder however, is the author OK? The story contained what seemed to be every possible malady or problem in the human experience: adultery, murder, incest, closeted homosexuality, suicide, child abduction, rape, spousal abuse, police brutality, hypocrisy, greed, cynicism, anger, depression, loss, despair, all with a strong foundation of pride. Just hoping this is not coming from an author who herself is feeling hopeless. All in all a well told of severe dysfunction and pain.

Another great story

Strong plot. Well written. You can't go wrong with this author. The reader is very strong, as well.

A Twist

I truly enjoyed this book. There are some unexpected twists in this book, which make the book even better.

Good story, great narrators

Upson's story is very evocative, moving, and historically accurate (descriptions of "war horse" in WWI, for example). Characters are well drawn and place very well drawn. Story excellent and well paced.
Ultimately great read, but devastating in its sadness and loss.

cautionary tale about incest

this is the type of book I read for entertainment. so this is the last Nicola Upson book for me. I should have bailed when there were 2 different graphic disturbing accounts of cruelty to animals. then it turns out it really is a sympathetic view of incest. all in all a really confusing mess. the narrator however is excellent.

I finished the 2nd book from this author and quit

As pointed out in other reviews incest is involved with multiple deaths in the story. Not clear as to why we needed to go down this road. Her first book was good, not great.
