About this listen

When Rick Hughes receives a reliquary pendant as a gift from an old friend, he has no idea what's coming next.

Drawn to an old excavation site, Rick stumbles upon a portal that takes him back to the eighth century, and in the middle of a Viking invasion.

After discovering a shocking link to the present, Rick is determined to intervene and save the inhabitants of the village from devastation - and to find a scientific explanation for what is happening.

With the perils of eighth century England surrounding him, can Rick save his new friends and live to tell the tale?

A Very Interesting Book and a Great Listen!

Mr. John Broughton's book, despite the odd title (Angenga is a real word - Old English for 'lone traveler'), is a much-better-than-I expected time travel book! The characters are well thought out, as are their relationships to each other (the chemistry works). The time travel gimmick is well-thought out, and not the standard time machine/shifter sort of affair. There are turns that were surprising, that I won't spoil. What I enjoyed the most though was the detail of the time and the location. It would seem that the author, John Broughton, really knows Lincolnshire in the 8th century. Seeing it through the characters' eyes was like watching a classic episode of Time Team! What fun - I didn't want to leave Little Carleton. There was this birth scene that I felt so much for...that I won't spoil it.

The audiobook is narrated by Andy Stevenson, who was great!! He voiced all the main characters really well, and distinctly. Just the right level of emoting. I have a real affection for one of the side characters: the scientist, Professor Faulkner, To my ears at least, Mr. Stevenson voiced him like the science presenter, James Burke (Connections) - always a good voice to hear. I hope there will be more books, and that Andy Stevenson returns to narrate them. Highly recommended!

An enjoyable romp through time

This is a fun listen. It tries a bit too hard to bring in a scientific explanation and academic studies seem a big motivation. You need to really suspend your disbelief at times, and I’m not sure I understood the end, really. But it was enjoyable and engrossing throughout.

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for a review.

Really well done . . . I just kept listening

I loved the cover and title and felt really satisfied by the pace of the book. It was just enough to keep me wanting to go back into the worlds John Broughton created. I'm always a sucker for a time travel book, but when you really get the history right and make a reader feel like they are there, it's a success. I know just how hard it is to write a book like this and I think Andy Stevenson was a great choice for narrator. He got the intonations of the characters right and I forgot, for a while this was a work of fiction. Well done.

Such an original adventure!

This was an incredibly entertaining story. It didn't require too much work, like some sci-fi novels. it's something anyone and everyone would enjoy, safe for kids, enjoyable for adults. I had fun getting to know the characters and listening as this very original story of a group of time-traveling friends with a mission to accomplish unrolled. The FABULOUS narrator truly brought this story to life.
I was sent a list of audiobooks to possibly review and I immediately picked this one, loved it, and voluntarily left a review here because this is my type of story... and I LOVED IT!!!

Entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was a very easy/entertaining story with just enough scientific material to make sense and not so much as for the listener to get totally lost. It was fun getting to know each character before and after each of their escapades. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

this ones not for me

I was given this book for free from audiobook boom and asked to leave an unbiased review for the author and narrator.
I don’t know if the author was writing his version of the movie “Timeline” or what, but I couldn’t really get into this story. I found it pretty boring. Less science, less mundane everyday stuff, and more about the time period and people in it. I thought the narrator was pretty good, he is the only reason I kept listening to the book. He does voice changes for different characters so it doesn’t sound like he’s just reading the book.
