About this listen
Here is an excerpt from the book:
As directed by Father Frederick, Anna and Billy sat on the two middle chairs. Father Frederick sat next to Billy, and Father James sat next to Anna. Both children fidgeted as they faced the computer screen that was already paused and cued to the school's kitchen. Anna and Billy could see the date and time stamped on the screen. They both sank into their chairs, fully realizing why the priests were there.
Father Frederick quickly assessed the children's reactions and knew he had them right where he wanted.
"I can see that you recognize this photo, yes? Can anyone tell me what we are looking at?"
"It's the school kitchen," mumbled Billy.
"Yes, it is," answered Father James. "And you can see the time and the date stamped there on the bottom?"
"Yes, Father," replied Anna.
"Shall we look at the rest of the film?"
"There's no need to," confessed Anna. "I will tell you exactly what happened under one condition,"
"You are in no position to demand conditions, young lady," scoffed Father Frederick.
Suddenly, Anna went silent, and her expression turned dark at Father Frederick's words. "And you, Father Frederick, have no right to judge me," she retorted.
Shocked and angered by the words of this young girl, Father Frederick stood up from his chair, grabbed Anna by her shoulders, and shook her.
"How dare you speak to me this way!" growled Father Frederick.
As soon as Father Frederick touched Anna, every thought and deed of his past spewed rapidly like a despicable movie into Anna's mind.
Anna was overwhelmed with disgust and anger. "Father Frederick and Father James, I know what both of you did and have kept hidden for many years. Before I say anything else, I want you to let Billy out of this office since he is innocent of everything. I was the one who snuck us into the kitchen, and it was my idea. Let Billy out of here, now, since we both have secrets that need to be protected. If you don't believe me, perhaps the name Cedric Henderson will convince you that you should listen to me."
Father Frederick went deathly pale. Beads of sweat erupted from every pore as sweat dripped off the horrified expression fused on his face.
"I take that as a 'Yes,' replied Anna. "Let Billy go, and I will tell you how I got into the kitchen."
"What's going on, Anna?" asked a baffled Billy.
"Don't worry, Billy," reassured Anna, "The Fathers and I have some things to talk about. You shouldn't be here for that, okay? Trust me."
Father Frederick quickly grabbed Billy by his arm, rushed to the door, opened it, and pushed Billy out of the room. "Go back to your class."
