About this listen
Excerpt from Tested:
Anna left the cafeteria and reentered the school building to swap her books. She opened the locker and stowed her lunch pail. Just after Anna placed her books on the top shelf, someone shoved her into her locker and slammed the door shut. Startled, Anna heard a padlock slide into the locker hasp and click shut.
"Take that, you smart ass bitch," sassed Darlene as she stared into the locker vent, taunting Anna. "Not so smart now, are you?" Darlene dangled the keys in front of the locker, then slipped them into her bra.
Darlene's friends and nearly everyone there whipped out their cell phones, expecting to hear Anna screaming and pounding against the locker like all of Darlene's previous victims. Their expectations, however, were met with an eerie silence.
Anna brooded in the locker, feeling a rage she had never felt before. "This is war!" she thought.
Anna peered through the locker's vent, memorizing the eager faces of Darlene's friends. The longer she stayed quiet, the closer the crowd moved toward the locker.
Losing patience, Darlene pounded on the locker, "Hey bitch, you still alive?"
Silence.
"You crying in there? Boo, hoo, hoo!" mocked Darlene as her friends laughed, waiting for a reaction.
"Darlene! What are you and your friends doing here?" Mr. Appleton demanded.
The group of students whipped their eyes toward Mr. Appleton and stared wide-eyed.
"Nothing," replied Darlene. "We're just welcoming the new girl to the school."
"Locking your victims in the locker again, huh? That stunt is old, Darlene." Mr. Appleton held out his hand, demanding the key. "Hand it over. Now!"
Reluctantly, Darlene reached into her bra, retrieved the padlock keys, and handed them over to Mr. Appleton.
Mr. Appleton unlocked the padlock and whispered into the locker while he swung the door open. "Sorry you had to go through this on your first day of school, but Taylorsville is a…."
Mr. Appleton froze and looked at Darlene. "What kind of game are you playing?"
"What's wrong? Did she pass out or die?"
"Who?' asked Mr. Appleton.
"The new chick, Anna. Is she passed out?"
"Not really," replied Mr. Appleton, "Come and see yourself."
"Why?" asked Darlene, expecting the worst.
"Well, there's nobody in here!"
