About this listen

A Tudor intrigue: feisty 12-year old Anne battles betrayal within her own family as she searches the secret rooms behind the paneling of Athelhampton Hall for clues to solve the Riddle. Why has her grasping cousin Young John bought her a pet ape from the Dorsetshire pirates?

Plucked from her dreary school-room lessons into an adult world, she slips into the rush-lit murk of the Great Hall at night dressed as a boy-actor to defeat one threat. But she discovers that to save herself requires more of others than she is prepared to ask.

This is the first of the Anne of Athelhampton trilogy, which is inspired by true historical events and characters from England's Dorsetshire in the 1500s. It is written by Giles Keating, who lives in Athelhampton's Tudor rooms just as Anne did five hundred years ago and who welcomes visitors to see the secret passages that she discovered, and the symbols in stone that she searched out to solve the Riddle.

It is read by Jess Moran, who has wide experience in narrating historical novels and other audiobooks. Jess' reading re-creates the world of Anne, racing along the stone floors of Athelhampton with her pet ape Endy to save her friends from Young John! Cover art is by local artist Noah Warnes.

A Delightful Mystery

This was my first experience with Giles Keating's work, and it was charming. Anne was a 12-year-old girl who was given an ape as a gift for her birthday by a cousin who seemed to have nefarious intentions. Anne had to figure out what her cousin was doing. I liked that the author based his story on actual characters from the 1500's. The descriptions of the Athelhampton and its secret passages made me want to visit the place. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Jess Moran's narration was great, and her performance enhanced the entertainment of the story. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Very good

This was an engaging, clean historical tale appropriate for the whole family. I loved learning about what life would have been like in the Middle Ages and I loved the spunky heroine! The narrator did an excellent job, and I was able to visualize each character individually.

Lass in Elizabeth I Court Fights Intrigue

This, while stand alone for now, appears to be the introduction to the Anne of Athelhampton series, which introduces us to Anne, a 12 year old young lady in the Tudor court, seeking to protect her family from the evils of intrigue. Well performed audiobook. Youth appropriate. A second book in the series was published 2023.
