About this listen

Encompassing three continents and spanning over 60 years, best-selling author Jeffrey Archer's As the Crow Flies brings to life a magnificent tale of one man's rise from rags to riches set against the backdrop of a changing century.

Growing up in the slums of East End London, Charlie Trumper dreams of someday running his grandfather's fruit and vegetable barrow. That day comes suddenly when his grandfather dies leaving him the floundering business. With the help of Becky Salmon, an enterprising young woman, Charlie sets out to make a name for himself as "The Honest Trader". But the brutal onset of World War I takes Charlie far from home and into the path of a dangerous enemy whose legacy of evil follows Charlie and his family for generations.

Good Book

This book started slow. Once you get used to the point of view changing from character to character it really picks up and at the end I didn't want to put it down.

old British family saga

It tells the story From humble beginning Off an Empire. The story is wonderfully told in American English with appropriate British accent. It takes each family member individually from what year to what year. I enjoyed it.

Another great story from a master storyteller

Another terrific Archer story with twists and turns all the way to the end, exceptionally well performed.

I hope that we will continue to see more new audio productions of Archer's older novels.

Amazing story

I never lost interest in this great story - there was never a dead spot, never a place I fast forwarded. It mostly moves at a brisk but measured pace with occasional acceleration, wicked tension and plot twists. (When around chapter 39 I suddenly realized how a couple of the characters were going to come together I blurted out "Oh sh**!" while listening in the bathtub.)

Charlie is a well developed and likeable character and you root for him throughout. The many English accents were well developed, easily distinguishable from one another and understandable even to my Midwestern American ear - great performance.

Deserves 5 Star rating!

Great story, compelling. Interesting characters engage the reader. Only negative: a bit too much like true life Mr. Selfridge!! Could have been a bit more original.

Well Told Story

The ending was absolutely brilliant! highly recommened. Archer provides a historical perspective without seeming like a history lesson.

Archer’s stories never disappoint

And this narrator, and his facility with accents, serves the story well. I enjoyed the book immensely and will look for the next.

Couldn't put it down.

Would you consider the audio edition of As the Crow Flies to be better than the print version?

I listen while I walk...and I've put on a lot of miles enjoying this book. Mr. Lee is an excellent reader.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one!

I bought this because of the stellar narration talents of John Lee. My first experience of a Jeffrey Archer tale, and it won’t be my last! Wonderful characters, and enough twists and turns in the story to keep you engrossed until the very end.
