About this listen

Antonious King has been selected to beta-test what promises to be the best VR MMO of 2038. As one of three hundred in the "Ascendant Program" he'll take part in a bloody civil war between the King of the Gods, Ignacious and the God-Hero Auren, granted powerful relics, artifacts, and a near-immortal body.

What's the catch?

There's no Logging out.

There is no game.

The planet Earth has been destroyed on a whim and the "Cadre of Justice" hunts Auren and his Ascendants across space with brutal efficiency. Tony learns quickly that there is much more at stake than gaining early access to the game everyone's been waiting for.

Forced into combat sports as a child by a father obsessed with victory, Tony finds himself again, forced into conflict. With his back against the wall and the most powerful beings in the universe out for his head, Tony unlocks the Dread Knight class; the perfect specialization for survival in the harsh biome of Arach and avenging mankind.

The hard part?

He won't be able to do it alone.

Vasna, the Totemic World-Shaping Shaman, Auren, the Lord of Auras, Jorogu of the Yokai cluster, and a friend thought long gone are just a few of the allies Tony will need to rally against Ignacious the Maddened God-King.

The litRPG genrea isn't really my thing but I picked this book up and gave it a shot after reading a few other series. The only complaint i can make is that it's over and I want more!

I really enjoyed the narrator as well, the sound effects added to the story were awesome, but if I could make one complaint, during the beginning where the main character speakes with some one else that has their voice being modulated for dramatic effect, it was kinda hard to understand the character speaking. all in all, great book!

A great first book!

As is common with LitRPGs (because it is common among "gamers") The main character has an unorthodox way of thinking. This combined with a solid foundation in tactics and some time spent in martial training gives our hero? several tools to take on bigger opponents as well as a desire to shape his own progress with a specific objective in mind. If such a person is thrown into a crisis and manages to survive initially, the RPG like system might see them grow into a grand figure which is always fun to watch. The author is even able to piece in some things from his own life in a non aggrandizing way.
The narrator is "Zachtually" amazing! ("Zachtually" being a term used in good humor by his fellow voice actors at Sound Booth Theatre). His voice is the kind of voice that would be expected of a radio narrator during the days of action packed radio stories prior to television, or the narrator of early television hero shows and cartoons. He is therefore easily able to do the battle-cries of epic heroes and the dominating sneering of overconfident dastardly villains.
The only thing that irritated me throughout the book was the way that the main character seemed to get "lucky" nearly every time he needed something and "just got a new ability" or when the situation should have been fatal, and yet...
Hopefully the author will balance, force payment for, or at least explain, the main character's "lucky streak" later in the series. I'm looking forward to seeing how the main character navigates several of the situations that he has "stepped in".
