About this listen

Return to the American Revolution in this blistering conclusion to the trilogy that began with the bestselling National Book Award Finalist Chains and continued with Forge, which The New York Times called "a return not only to the colonial era but to historical accuracy."

As the Revolutionary War rages on, Isabel and Curzon have narrowly escaped Valley Forge - but their relief is short-lived. Before long they are reported as runaways, and the awful Bellingham is determined to track them down. With purpose and faith, Isabel and Curzon march on, fiercely determined to find Isabel's little sister Ruth, who is enslaved in a Southern state - where bounty hunters are thick as flies.

Heroism and heartbreak pave their path, but Isabel and Curzon won't stop until they reach Ruth, and then freedom, in this grand finale to the acclaimed Seeds of America trilogy from Laurie Halse Anderson.

This was an excellent series. I did not want to put the book down. It is amazing to think that slaves actually went through what they did.

Fabulous

It was one of the best books I have ever read. It is graphic but not too graphic. I am 12 and could read this until I am 30!!! I is so good!!!!

So glad I finally got around to listening to this book. Forge was good, but suffered from middle book syndrome. All that is forgotten in my love of this conclusion. I love the historical accuracy of the book and Anderson's unflinching honesty about what life was like for enslaved and free blacks during the Revolution with both sides using their desire for freedom against them. Yet, she also shows why so many were willing to sacrifice for a country that wasn't offering them freedom, because they believed that they needed to fight to gain their freedom. It made me sad to read it with two hundred plus years of hindsight, realizing how long the struggle would continue for ever basic civil rights.

The story of Isabel, Corzon and Ruth was compelling as well. The characters we met in Chains are older and have gone through a lot, but it isn't hard to empathize with their struggle to find freedom and peace amidst the country's struggle for the same things.

A very satisfying conclusion!

Excellent conclusion to the series!

What made the experience of listening to Ashes the most enjoyable?

For the third time, Ms. Anderson has scored. I was excited to read the last book in this trilogy, and I was not disappointed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end - but I can't say more without giving it away. Suffice it to say, this was a good ending to a good book (or really, set of three books).

Any additional comments?

If you are interested in the American Revolution or slavery, I strongly recommend all three of these books - Chains, Forges, and Ashes.

A difficult topic (slavery during the Am. Rev)

Laurie Halse Anderson is one of my favorites authors already! I've only read Chains because I got recommended this by a friend I thought it would be very boring. But my mom and I fell in love with this series after we read forge we had to read Ashes!

The BEST book series
