About this listen

For a brilliant detective and an avid mystery reader, truth really is stranger—and deadlier—than fiction in a suspenseful and wickedly entertaining novel about the games killers play.

In 1985, Kat McCann was six years old when renowned Austrian detective Alik Lisser solved her mother’s murder. And unfortunately proved Kat’s father as the culprit.

Ten years later Kat is still obsessed with the heroic criminologist. She’s also addicted to the bestselling novels inspired by Alik’s ingenious deductions—penned by the grande dame of whodunits, who’s a bit of a mystery herself. Kat has devoured them all. Even the one based on her father’s crime.

When Kat and Alik fatefully cross paths again, a friendship evolves, and Alik is delighted to share the secrets of his success with such an eager and clever girl by inviting Kat to solve a murder of her very own. One that challenges everything Kat believes about the detective, an elusive author, and Kat’s notorious past.

Now, as fact and fiction and truth and deception collide, it’s all Kat can do to survive the shocking twist ending to her own life story.

Critic reviews

“Lauren Fortgang narrates this twisty new audiobook about a 1990s teenager who is forced to recognize that it may be better not to meet your heroes.… Fortgang captures the youthful nature of teenaged Kat and the way she moves through the messy world of adults to find justice for her dad. Fortgang also skillfully creates a believable cast of adult characters who are caught up in their own affairs.”AudioFile Magazine

“The title is a warning to both Corin’s resourceful heroine and his readers. A rabbit-hole whodunit full to overflowing of Easter eggs.”Kirkus Reviews

“Comic book writer Joshua Corin delivers a dollop of metafictional creepiness in this playful whodunit set in 1995 Boston.”Publishers Weekly

Great Mystery, Fun Listen

Wonderful mystery with recognizable good guys and bad guys. Entertaining who-done-it and how-they-done-it with twists. The narrator was perfectly suited for the young heroine, Kat. All loose ends were tied up nicely. This was a great listen and a perfect audiobook.

Young Adult

This is clearly a YA mystery and should have been billed as such. The first half of the book is promising, with lots of fun references to Agatha Christie and her work. But at the halfway point, the story takes a sharp pivot into the ridiculous, and getting through the rest of the book was a slog.

The narrator is fantastic. I'm sure some listeners will have something to say about her accent work, but the voice acting itself is excellent.

The writer needs to know what year they are writing in.

Several times during this book the writer used modern day information or speech that wasn’t used in the alleged years this book is about. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone unless you want to be annoyed.
