An excerpt from Ursula and the Mystery of the Miwoks:
Could it be all of the pizzas that Ursula ate the previous summer? Or the leftovers from the Ahwahnee feast that Ursula brought back to her bear cave? Or is it just because our Ursula is growing up? Whatever the reason, the bears’ winter bed no longer fits all three large bears. Twice during their hibernation, Daddy rolls onto his side which makes, in turn, Mommy roll over causing our Ursula to plunk onto the floor. The third time, Ursula decides that three plunkings are enough for one winter and sets up her bed in the new indoor waterfall. (We call them showers.) Mommy told Daddy to install one in their cave after the bears spent the night at the Ahwahnee so that she no longer needs to walk to the Bear Town waterfall to shower with the other bears. There, she just feels a little too bare.
Luckily, for Ursula, the indoor waterfall only ‘turns on’ when the snow begins to melt. But it is now early spring, and the sun is growing in strength. When it was just a drop or two, Ursula groaned and returned to her dreams, but now it is a steady stream of drops and ends Ursula’s hibernation.
Annoyed as she wakes, Ursula loses a wonderful dream of playing and swimming with Lost Arrow. Ursula’s eyes suddenly open wide, “Will Lost Arrow come back this summer?” It is the type of thought that, afterwards, you know you won’t be able to get back to sleep. Have you had these? Like suddenly remembering that you forgot to do a book report.
She dries herself and notices a shaft of light coming through the waterfall hole. It is the spring sun and Ursula wants to feel its warmth.
Quietly she slips out of the entrance, so she doesn’t wake her parents, and spreads herself onto a warm rock. She enjoys that wonderful feeling, but her Lost Arrow question won’t let go and, whether dry and warm or not, she must know its answer.
