About this listen

From Jim Haynes, one of our most successful and prolific Australiana authors, comes a collection of classic Australian stories, yarns and furphies ... all of them unknown.

Things are not always as they seem, or as we've been told. Was the Ghan really named after the Afghan traders, and do we really know what the Ashes are?

From the remote outback and cattle stations to coastal towns, Jim introduces us to the liars and larrikins, the bushies and the stockmen to tell the funniest, the most amazing and the eccentric stories that capture the heart of the Australian spirit.

Any additional comments?

As an American wanting to learn about Australia I was expecting this book to have tips like little known facts. There were a few but for the majority the book turned out to be lots of facts about sports, battles, and poets, subjects not at all of interest to me.

Perhaps culture difference ?

Tons of great facts, a few good and gripping stories, some parts were hard to listen to just because I did not find them interesting.

Overall, excellent and I would recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the history that goes unseen from the outside, as well as the real story behind some Aussie "facts". Hard to say if they're absolutely true, but entertaining nonetheless.

Good Australiana
