Summer Series, Ep.30: We meet... Tommy Ford

  • Summary

  • In the latest episode of the podcast, brought to you by Ski Racing Media, Alan and I met with tmthr American giant slalom superstar, Tommy Ford. Ford shared his experiences of growing up in a snow-surrounded scene and hitting the slopes from a very young age. This keenness came quickly to him with the speed at which he raced in youth competitions and the short space of time it took coaches to recognise his talent. This early success was capped off by Ford taking an impressive 2009 World Junior Championship slalom silver medal in Garmisch, aged 19. It is now nearly 15 years since a 20-year-old Tommy first stepped into a World Cup start gate and, in this interview, he expressed the up and downs of that decade and a half. The most notably high being his WC win at home in the 2018 Birds of Prey Giant Slalom from Beaver Creek. Ford also told Alan and Matt about how he has seen a very strong American team become weakened after certain retirements. However, he now firmly believes that there is success in the not-too-distant future of River Radamus after his maiden WC podium in Palisades Tahoe in February, another special moment that Ford was able to share. He also believes that there is now strength in the women’s technical and speed teams which has taken time but can be built around the unrivalled success of Mikaela Shiffrin. After having turned 35 during the 2024 FIS World Cup finals in Saalbach, Matt asked if Tommy had any regrets from his career so far. The only thing that seemed to crop up was the chance he didn’t take to expand his WC skiing beyond giant slalom and into slalom (where he had success when he was younger) or Super-G (a discipline in which he has started 15 WC races) Going into a World Championship season, Ford is very confident that he can continue to compete at the very highest level. It would also have significant meaning for any American if they can qualify for next season’s FIS World Cup finals as they’re being held in Sun Valley, Idaho.
