About this listen

Can our joy be complete without unity? According to the Apostle Paul in Philippians 2:1-4, perhaps not.

So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (ESV)

What we miss in our translations is that while verse 1 uses the singular “you”, verse 2 uses the 2nd-person plural “you all.” Perhaps Paul had experienced joy in watching their individual spiritual growth, but it was incomplete and unfulfilled. The fullness of joy would come when they sought God as One.

This is a big problem for the Church, because we not only misunderstand Biblical unity, but frequently reject it. "Y'all" is a regional way of saying the plural "you all" with a level of familiarity and connection, and I believe the life of Jesus and words of God can get our spiritual bodies there in ways beyond what we could pursue on our own. This 7-part devotional was designed to affirm how God is growing you, and provoke and encourage you to make it y'all. Each part affirms your individual journey, explores how you can continue it in unity with others, and offers questions to take each element deeper so that y'all's joy can be made complete.

Whether you read this in 7 days or 7 weeks, I believe this invitation for unity is for you -- and y'all -- today.
