神武天皇の母といわれている女性の神様、玉依姫命はあるとき、大阪湾から淀川を上って京都の鴨川を抜け、北の上流の方へと向かいます。そして鞍馬川と貴船川に分かれるところで鞍馬川の方へ上ろうとした際、舵取りの神様が現れて「こちらではありません。あちらの方ですよ」と貴船川の方へ行くよう玉依姫命に教えたという伝説があります。この舵取りの神が現れたといわれているのが現在の貴船口の駅があるところ、そして玉依姫命は貴船川の上流にある貴船神社では玉依姫命が祀られています。
