Mountain man Buck Jackson is alone again after finding squatters in his Colorado cabin - pretty Donna Wheeler and her children, pioneers headed for California but were left behind by their wagon train. After the Wheelers' departure for their family's ranch in Kansas, Buck sets out to find his old fur-trapping partner, Kit Carson. Kit was badly wounded in an ambush near the Colorado border and Buck doesn't know if he'll find his old friend alive and well, or buried somewhere in the New Mexico Territory. Along the way Buck endures the perils and pleasures of the trail - whiskey and tall tales at the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous, a risky encounter with violent Comancheros, the unexpected rescue of two Navajo children, and a flash flood that nearly kills him. All normal events in the life of a mountain man, however, Buck must use all of his skills to survive, seek out Kit, and finally make it back home to Colorado.
