Publisher's summary

Poetry. Even all by themselves, the titles of Patricia Lockwood's poems reveal the sort of surreal, enigmatic, rhetorically elongated world her sensibility inhabits effortlessly: "When We Move Away from Here, You'll See a Clean Square of Paper Where His Picture Hung", "The Cartoon's Mother Builds a House in Hammerspace", "The Front Half and the Back Half of a Horse in Conversation", "Children with Lamps Pouring out of Their Foreheads", and the inimitable "Killed with an Apple Corer, She Asks What Does That Make Me".

I love the book, but audio is not the right format

Where does Balloon Pop Outlaw Black rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really didn't like it as an audio book. I think that it is more difficult for poetry to be consumed without any visual cues to line breaks and capitalization, etc. I think this is especially true for Patricia Lockwood's abstract poetry that includes a lot of wordplay. Maybe it's just personal preference, but I think a lot of the magic of her poetry was lost on me when I couldn't see the words.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Balloon Pop Outlaw Black?

I loved the continuous theme of cartoons how they are simultaneously dynamic, and also just flat paper.

What didn’t you like about Patricia Lockwood’s performance?

I think Lockwood's reading was fine, considerably better than her performance on Priestdaddy, but I just didn't like this work performed.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, especially because it was easy to get a little lost and I think continuity was important for this book.

Any additional comments?

Well worth a read, I love Patricia Lockwood, and I'd highly recommend buying a paper copy of Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexual and this book, too. If you want something whimsical and fun, this is still alright on audiobook, I just don't think I was able to appreciate it fully.
