About this listen
In this definitive expose, Walkley-award winning journalist Debi Marshall turns her investigative blowtorch to the shocking Adelaide Family murders and to secrets long hidden in the City of Corpses.
This chilling account begins with the liberalisation of South Australia under the premiership of Don Dunstan and demands answers to decades-old questions. Who were the Family killers? Why are suppression orders still protecting suspects four decades later? Why do some of these serial killings remain unsolved? Only one suspect, Bevan Spencer Von Einem, has been charged and convicted.
With her combination of investigative skills and sensitivity, Marshall treads a harrowing path to find the truth, including confronting Von Einem in prison, pursuing sexual predators in Australia and overseas, taking a deep-dive into the murky world of paedophiles, challenging police and judiciary, and talking to victims and their families. The outcome is shocking and tragic.
Following broadcast of the Foxtel television and podcast series Debi Marshall Investigates Frozen Lies, numerous people came forward to courageously share new information with Marshall. Their stories are here. Banquet takes aim at the public service, wealthy professionals and the judiciary and for the first time reveals hitherto unpublished details of the Family. And it demands a Royal Commission to break the silence that keeps the truth hidden.
Heartbreaking Story of Abuse and Corruption

Rather than the 30 minute shallow rehash many crimes are told in , this is a deep dive into true evil, the incredible tragedy of young people murdered and the hollow, breathtaking price their families pay.
Marshall is herself a victims family member. Her partner was murdered and she had a long and scary journey in search of justice. Her books dive deep into not just the graphic details but the sorrow and squalor behind them.
The tragedy is tangible and will stay with you. The perpetrators will make you want to punch something and the corruption and cynicism of the powerful people who ensured that most of the people involved were never punished will make you really, really angry.
Fascinating, scary and perhaps most disturbing of all, a chronicle of the real cost of murder, this book really stayed with me. Marshall said that by the end she felt she may actually be suffering from PTSD from writing this book. Having read it I know what she means.
This is Really True Crime. Not a sensational and graphic snippet of horror stories. This is the brutal, senseless cruelty of the perpetrators. The sheer waste and tragedy of the victims and the ongoing experience of grief and frustration the families will never escape. Her final analysis of the of the only convicted perpetrator will leave you breathless. This stayed with me long after I finished it.
A brilliant and intellectual study of the tragedy this case was. Be warned this is never gratuitous but it is a dark story and Marshall provides a very deep dive into a truly terrible time. It will stay with you on a personal level.
Brilliant.
