About this listen

A darkly funny meditation on creativity and family, Be Brief and Tell Them Everything tracks the life of a middle-aged author who is struggling to write his next novel while trying to come to grips with his son's disabilities, set against a backdrop of ecological catastrophe and escalating human insanity in contemporary Los Angeles.

A beautiful, powerful, concise work of autofiction that is reminiscent of My Struggle and Grief is the Thing with Feathers, Be Brief documents the stops and starts of adulthood and marriage, and the joys and challenges of parenting, while defining what it means to be a good man, and a good writer.

Loved it, lives up to the title

While I haven’t listened to podcasts of my choosing for the last year, I previously got to know Brad through his podcast and really miss it. The focus and trueness to the title resonate with me and is a masterclass on memoir writing, especially if you struggle with remembering the past. As he’s mentioned elsewhere, some of this is fiction but based in truth. I know that’s the best I can hope when I write mine.

Beautiful, stark and insightful

Many of Brad’s notions parallel my life journey and he writes so clearly about the complexities of living an uneasy examined life. It’s a beautiful book that pairs well with his podcast conversation with Debbie Millman on Design Matters.

A heartfelt story of pain and gratitude

As a longtime fan of the Otherppl podcast, I enjoyed listening to the audiobook of BE BRIEF AND TELL THEM EVERYTHING read by Brad Listi. Listi writes about fatherhood, the frustrations of the writing process, and the heartbreak of a loved one’s disability so candidly, with great care and gentleness. Excellent book!

More than it seems initially

Initially, you’ll think that there’s not much here. Not much happening. But listen on and there’s more, it’s deeper and richer. Heavier and lighter than i thought.

Yup- everything

Wow. Is auto fiction truer than fiction? Memoir? “Sad Dad Brad” gets at such significant meaning I kinda don’t care what might have actually happened because of the larger truth. Thank you for daring to at last arrive at these words and share them.
