About this listen

The genuine recollections of a gold rush prospector, barber, dentist, and his frontier philosophy. Set during the mostly forgotten Georgia gold rush of the 1830s this tale focuses on Bob - a lucky, but grumpy gold prospector who doesn’t get along with anybody. When Bob’s exiled by the townsfolk and forced to live alone in the wilderness surrounded by bears, he makes uncanny decisions that result in a fantastical story.

A New American Folktale

Bear Bob is a wonderful new story for all ages. Truly American, it melts your heart easily with its portrait of an outsider who finds unique bliss in the mountains of 19th Century Georgia. Part history lesson, part myth making, Bear Bob is a true delight.

Wonderful teaching text

Wow! Colin is such a descriptive writer! Not only is this an entertaining story, but it could be a fantastic teaching tool. It is filled with rich vocabulary, including many words that are targeted in middle or high school. His descriptive writing really paints a picture for the reader and his use of figurative language is wonderful! Such creative similes and metaphors. As an educator it is difficult at times to find mentor text that touches on so many of the Common Core Standards. This story definitely fits the bill and is appropriate for many ages. I could see even third and fourth graders loving experiencing this as a read aloud. I would also recommend his other book, Miss’ippi Blues Tail. Another entertaining story! Thank you Colin!!

Really well written

A very thought provoking read. And when I say "read" - I actually "listened" to it on audible. It was the perfect way to get really into the story as its told in a vernacular that is of earlier times. The author has done a beautiful job showing the reader the differences of the two main characters' views of each other, and opens the reader's mind to recognize we also make assumptions & definitions, in current times. I am usually a non-fiction fan, but this work of fiction was a comforting and kind story. The narrator was excellent.

Fantastic voice of narrator

The Sam Elliot Like voice of the narrator is perfectly paired with the great story, and even better history lesson of gold country and prospect in’. The idea that he is telling the story while cutting the listeners hair is a original idea. Let’s of “ dropped gs” so if your sensitive to that stuff then you might get a little tired by the time the story is over.

Bear Bob is magical!

This story is written with a musical sense of word choice. The writing evokes a time from the American past that includes almost Shakespearean vocabulary. There’s magic in the story as well as in the listening. Delivery is a perfect match and complement to the flavor of the characters and the plot. There are many “life lessons” that make the book appealing for anyone from age 8 up.

A good lesson in an endearing story

A fun tale for all ages about a man who finds more good living in the wild than among men, I could listen to it over and over.

A delightful yarn!

Truly a delightful story wonderfully performed, reminiscent of the classic tales of Paul Bunyan. Delicious use of language, erudite in its own style. An entertaining hour that transports to the magic of story time.
