About this listen

  • Six-time Wall Street Journal Top-10 best-selling author, Audible Top-10 best-selling audiobook, and Amazon All Star!

This is the second volume in a best-selling series of true stories from "[a]n extraordinary landscape populated with befuddled bears, hormonally-crazed elk, homicidal wild boars, hopelessly timid wolves, and nine million tourists, some of whom are clueless." In Kim DeLozier's world, when sedated wild black bears wake up unexpectedly in the back seat of a helicopter in mid-flight, or in his car as he's driving down the highway, or in his office while he's talking on the phone, it's just another day in the park.

You'll love seeing Kim and a fellow ranger tested as they bravely take on the task of dealing with enraged wild boars, elk, and more. A hilarious, heartwarming, and heartbreaking memoir by the chief wildlife ranger in the number-one most popular family vacation destination in the USA, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. For over 30 years, Kim DeLozier acted as a referee in the wild, trying to protect millions of park visitors from one of the densest populations of wild black bears in America - and the bears from tourists who get too close.

A good book about the very dedicated men and women of the Forest service.
I will say that if you have to sacrifice a healthy animal at the very least the meat should be donated to those in need. What a waste to bury an elk when it could have fed many. People are extremely self-centered when they feed wild animals, more often than not leading to a tragic outcome for the very creatures they are so fascinated by.

Disturbing

I thoroughly enjoyed the 1st volume in this series and the 2nd volume was just as enjoyable. Just saw that Kim has written “Bear Bloopers“ as the 3rd in the series.

The narrator, Cary Jones, provides an outstanding performance!!

Another fascinating listen!

Absolutely loved this story and the way it was presented. Couldn't put it down .Got my husband to listen to it as well. Absolutely the best narrator I've heard on audible...Wish there were more.

Great Book

I enjoyed it, but about 5 hours is about all it is worth investing. At first I thought the ranger was female (Kim), but then realized Kim is also a man's name! That did make a difference since the narrator is male.

Marginally More about Elks than Bears

This is the second book, and didn’t disappoint. Fun stories, great information about the smoky mountains and best of all, the compassion of the wild animals shown by the rangers.
Thanks for another great listen!

Amazing, funny and touching. Read both volumes. I can’t wait for more. I’ve always enjoyed the Smokies and now to hear someone who spent their life there has been a blessing.

Hilarious Reality of a Park Ranger

I really enjoyed book 1, but I figured book 2 would be just more of the same, and I didn’t think it would be as good as the first. I was very pleasantly surprised. The descriptions of the challenges and successes of the elk and red wolf reintroduction programs were fascinating, particularly since one of our local science museums has participated in the red wolf breeding program. This book far exceeded my expectations and I highly recommend it.

Not just a continuation of book 1
