About this listen

She was described as the most dangerous woman in Europe by Adolf Hitler; Noël Coward said people who spent any time with her were always reduced to gibbering worshippers; she adored Margaret Thatcher and disliked Germans; she found the French comical and hankered for the old days of Empire and Commonwealth. Above all, though, she was loved by the nation and in this affectionate and often hilarious inside story of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, her former equerry Major Colin Burgess reveals what life was like living with the most private of all the Royals.

Behind Palace Doors is a unique and warmly remembered historic insight into one of our longest-surviving institutions. Constantly fascinating and packed with previously untold stories, this is also a celebration of a life gone - and a way of life fast disappearing.

Highly Entertaining if you are old enough to remember the Queen Mum!

Wanted a book that was an enjoyable easy listen to when I commute to work or do mundane things! The near raider is truly funny and puts a lot of great voices out there so look forward to each passage! You have to be at least in your 40s probably to enjoy this -otherwise you may not recall most of the history on it.

Delightful!

This book was casual and gossipy without being mean.

Filled with first-hand anecdotes from the Queen Mum’s former equerry, it was a light read that keep me entertained throughout.

Amazing opportunity

Very interesting story. The stories about the Queen Mother were very interesting, it must have been amazing to work for her. The narrator did an amazing job, you could close your eyes and picture the Queen saying the things read in this book. So loved it. I bet she kept Major Colin on his toes at all times.

Interesting story.....

If you could sum up Behind Palace Doors in three words, what would they be?

What goes on at a Royal home.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

OMG Those voice impersonations of quotes and remarks by others is truly awful! WHY bother? Just read the book!

Royal watchers, check it out

I am fascinated with the royal family, so was excited to find this book. Told by the Queen Mother's equerry, it's only a short time in her life in which the story takes place, as , if I recall, these jobs are only for set amounts of time. It's been awhile since I listened to this so don't remember all the details.
The author does a nice job telling the story with quite a bit of humor thrown in. It's not a tell-all type book in which he trashes people. He just tells what life is like behind the scenes.
Recommended to anyone who enjoys learning a bit more about the royal family.

Interesting read it you are a into the royal family.

I enjoyed this book it was written by a man who clearly enjoyed his time in royal service but was neither too fawning nor too critical. If you want to know more about the Queen Mother of how royal service works this is a good one for you.
