About this listen
In Belle, the first book in the new series, friends of Mildred Budge see life in Cloverdale through the eyes of Belle Deerborn.
Belle Deerborn lives next door to Mildred Budge. The Deerborn house is across and open field, and Belle sits out on her back stoop each morning reading her Bible and also watching Mildred live and the people who come and go. Others see Belle as living a confined and desperate life, but that's not true at all. Belle is becoming a great problem solver, is learning to manage herself more thoughtfully, and has a creative side that she is cultivating with her sewing projects.
Contrary to the reputation of caregiving, Belle Deerborn is anything but trapped, depressed, or hopeless. She has been surprised by the many evidences of God's very real help in time of trouble, and that very real help often comes from good neighbors.
One of those people is Mildred Budge, but she's not the only answer to Belle's prayers in this tender story about a long-time marriage and how it is coming to fulfilment and also, in a way, winding down. If you are a friend of Mildred Budge you will enjoy the company of Belle A Mildred Budge Friendship Story.
And if you are the aging wife or husband of a spouse with a chronic physical problem Belle’s story will remind you that you are not as alone as the circumstances around you appear to suggest. To find out more about how Belle is living out her season as a caregiver, check out this new addition to the Mildred Budge stories.
Other titles in the Mildred Budge books are:
Mildred Budge in Cloverdale
Mildred Budge in Embankment
The Bride’s Room
Short story collections and Christmas novella:
Miss Budge in Love
The Mission of Mildred Budge
Miss Budge Goes to Fountain City

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

Story
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

In fifth grade my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed. It didn't take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever. For the next seven years, it was us. She's the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

Story
“Don’t you ever want to run away from Christmas?” Mildred Budge’s answer to Dixie was immediate and truthful. “Yes, yes, yes,” Mildred said with conviction. She couldn’t stop saying yes, though the very idea that a good church lady would want to run away from the occasion during the year that marked the birth of Jesus-- the reason for the season for a tried and true church lady of the South-- was almost beyond explanation. “Then, let’s go. Let’s go to Fountain City and find Mr. Fixit and eat sublime pies,” her friend Dixie urged. The two needed Mr. Fixit because of a ...

Mildred Budge returns in Kingdom Come, a story about setbacks and how to face them. The fourth novel in the series, Kingdom Come, continues with the stories of Mildred, Fran, Winston, Janie, and Chase. In this story, Mildred’s Cloverdale bungalow is crowded. Her best friend Fran observes, “For a single woman, Mildred, your quiver is getting very full.” And it is. There is little room in Mildred’s Cloverdale bungalow for solitude and extended prayer, and Mildred Budge needs both. Many people do. And it is harder to find that kind of quiet in a world where background noise is as ...

Pre grieving
I’ve worn the shoes of the caregiver wife, the too tired to talk friend and the strength it takes to walk next to your husband as the long goodbye plays out. Well done in my opinion. Sad but truthful. Only when your girlfriends experience it does it dawn on them you have walked this head of them. Faith and real world well woven together.

The surrendered life of a caregiver
I appreciated the attention to the details of caring for a spouse with dementia. Belle's attitude of quiet surrender to the essential cares of life and the loving patient love she showed to Sam was inspiring. I also appreciated the selfless respect and devotion shown to Sam by the church ladies and men. Would it only be so in real life. Christians need to come along side of those that are hurting, to the household of God first, but then to those in the world as Jesus directs us.

Belle
Excellent! Belle is such a good character, and I loved and laughed along with the day to day life of her and Sam, her husband. Sam has dementia; and Belle tells what it's like in her rollercoaster life.

Totally relatable.
This is a touching story. I am living this life. I am a church lady with a husband who has Alzheimer's. He was an elder and we were in church every Sunday now we do good to make it once per month. As his caretaker, this author has told my story and it is well written. I recommend this to anyone who is a caretaker but especially one caring for someone with dementia.
