About this listen

The United States has the largest criminal justice system in the world, with currently more than 7 million adults and juveniles in jail, prison, or community custody. Because they spend enough time in prison to disrupt their connections to their families and their communities, they are not prepared for the difficult and often life-threatening process of reentry. As a result, the percentage of these people who return to a life of crime and additional prison time escalates each year. Beyond Bars is the most current, practical, and comprehensive guide for ex-convicts and their families about managing a successful reentry into the community.

This audiobook includes:

  • Tips on how to prepare for release while still in prison
  • Ways to deal with family members, especially spouses and children
  • Finding a job
  • Money issues such as budgets, bank accounts, taxes, and debt
  • Avoiding drugs and other illicit activities
  • Free resources to rely on for support

Must read for everyone. . Not only ones with a loved one inside the wire.

I appreciate the great detail taken to explain the logistics and some various emotions of the formerly incarcerated individua upon releasel. Knowing firsthand that many first time offenders do not get a second chance, I'm grateful that this book was written and that I am able to read it before my loved one is released. I feel that the knowledge I attained through reading the book will help me have compassion and patience while they transition back into society after decades of being behind bars. The book has also stirred within me the desire to become active in my community assisting reentry. Thank you for writing this book and making it available to us! I will do what I can to get copies brought into multiple visiting parks so that the curious will have access and will l read enough to buy themselves a copy and buy a copy for the loved ones inside if the facility will allow it to reach them. A >must read< for all of us.

Compelling - and Very Direct

Once started I couldn't stop listening. our judicial system is far too punitive. Especially after one has paid for his or her crime. All teens should hear this and get "scared straight".

Great book, practical, paced, and realistic.

It was easy to follow along and keep up with. Full of information that may seem logical to some but to others is an eye opening experience. Refreshing to see the preparation and research that went into this book. Must-have and recommend for all those who are either curious, knows a family/friend that's a convict, or is a convict themselves.

Decent Read

In my humble opinion, this should be renamed, “Beyond Bars: A Guide of Rules for Prison and After.”

Don’t bother with this book

While there was a little bit of good advice (be honest with your parole officer), there was a great deal of misinformation and bad advice (even if your children have been adopted you must find them; women who give birth while incarcerated are handcuffed and wear leg shackles while giving birth).
