About this listen
Stories include a former Indiana Governor who was a Prisoner of War in Vietnam. A Hoosier physician is the only man in history to receive the Navy’s highest combat decoration, the Navy Cross. Perhaps most notable are some of Indiana’s heroes of the air including an aviation pioneer who set the world altitude record for lighter-than-air aircraft. Another is one of only three men to become an ACE in World War II, credited with shooting down aircraft in all theaters from all Axis nations: Italy, Germany, and Japan. He is also the only American flier to ever be highly decorated for shooting down an American aircraft in combat. Yet another Indiana pilot is the only man in history to received the Air Force’s highest combat decoration the Air Force Cross, three times.
Each of the heroes profiled herein served with great distinction and they are a credit to the Hoosier State and their hometowns. These are the stories that will leave you shaking your head in disbelief, proving as one author once wrote, “Truth is not only stranger than fiction, but far more interesting.”
