About this listen
Legal marijuana is the hottest story in the US today. Twenty-five states and the District of Columbia have authorized sales in some form; Denver has more legal marijuana dispensaries than Starbucks franchises. We are witnessing the dawn of a new industry. And like the early days of gourmet coffee chains, the rules and players are being established on the fly.
Christian Hageseth is the face of the revolution - an entrepreneur and father of three who worked in the white-collar professional world for 20 years before opening his first dispensary. The founder and chairman of Green Man Cannabis, the fastest-growing marijuana company in the country, he's the perfect tour guide through the wild frontier, where police hardly know what laws to enforce or parents what to tell their kids. He paints a colorful picture not only of how he got into the business but of the big interests that are eager to do the same - namely Big Tobacco, Big Agra, and Big Pharma.
He predicts a future where the marijuana market splits in two: the high-end, artisanal market, supplied by individual growers and small farms, and the mass market, covered by the cigarette giants and anyone bold enough to compete with them. Much like beer and coffee, your brand of weed will be just one more reflection of your lifestyle. It's an entrepreneur's dream, and Hageseth invites us along as he pitches skeptical investors, negotiates a shaggy cast of colleagues, and builds the biggest business he can.

Story
They were a band of outsiders unable to get jobs with New York's gilded financial establishment. They would go on to corner the world's multitrillion-dollar oil market, reaping unimaginable riches while bringing the economy to its knees. Meet the self-anointed kings of the New York Mercantile Exchange. In some ways, they are everything you would expect them to be: a secretive, members-only club of men and women who live lavish lifestyles; cavort with politicians, strippers, and celebrities; and blissfully jacked up oil prices to nearly $150 a barrel while profiting off the misery of the working class.

Jake Halpern introduces us to a former banking executive and a former armed robber who become partners and go in quest of "paper" - the uncollected debts that are sold off by banks for pennies on the dollar. As Halpern shows, the world of consumer debt collection is a wild and unregulated shadow land, where operators may misrepresent a debtor's situation, make illegal threats, and even lay claim to debts that are not theirs to collect in the first place.

American technological prowess used to be unrivaled. But because of globalization, and with the blessing of the US government, once proprietary materials, components, and technologies are increasingly commercialized outside the United States. Nowhere is this more dangerous than in China's monopoly of rare earth elements - materials that are essential for nearly all modern consumer goods, gadgets, and weapons systems.

Great primer on a new industry!
This is a great book about the birth of a new industry. Anyone interested in marijuana will love this book - but as an entrepreneur - what could beat a perspective on an industry in its infancy. This is history in the making and a ton of folks will be part of the windfall. Hageseth proves that nothing new is easy - but if you stick it out and be open to learning - well, then the sky is the limit. I really loved every chapter.

You can feel the Author's intentions in a good way
If you could sum up Big Weed in three words, what would they be?
Ego, self importance
What was most disappointing about Christian Hageseth and Joseph D'Agnese ’s story?
That is was mostly a glossing over of events.
What does Christian Hageseth bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
You could tell the excitement and disappointment in the stories, no one tell stories better than the people who were there. I don't know that I would have enjoyed this as much if it was not read by the author. It really made the book for myself.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The interviews to find the initial growers.
Any additional comments?
Perfect car drive book to listen to, kinda like having a friend recount their lifes events after not seeing them for years. I loved it.

A Cannabis Enthusiast's Guide to the Industry
An overview of the Cannabis industry by one who has experienced it, from consumer to legal grower of medical Cannabis. Read by the author, with appropriate enthusiasm for one who has lived to see a dream come true. After listening to this title, I am a more knowledgeable advocate and practitioner; he presents some solid arguments for national legalization.

Much more than weed book.
1st like that author who narrates well. Speaks his story and spin on how this is just a beginning of what will someday soon be obvious acceptance. 2nd it is a great business book. Find your passion and stay with it for what pursuit of happiness is all about. Imho Christian echos owner of Dogfish Head Craft Brewer Sam Calagione. Explorer, entrepreneur, risk takers. Both care about doing things right. caring for their employees while educating our world.
