About this listen

Newly widowed, still beautiful, and suddenly wealthy, Maggie Pearson Stearn has come home to Wisconsin to start a new life. The recent death of her much-loved husband has left an empty space in her heart.

Back on familiar ground, with a gratifying business venture off to promising start, she finds a new zest for life in the rekindling of old friendships—and of her love affair with her high-school sweetheart. But he is married, and she finds herself marooned between two generations of selfishness and disapproval—her mother's and her daughter's.

I read this book many years ago but my old eyes won’t let me read like I used to so I thought I’d listen. This is an abridged version but it never stated that in the description. Disappointing. And the reader needs to take a drink of water... she sounds like she has terrible dry mouth.

I loved the story

One of my top three Spencer books. The only reason it’s not rated higher is because this copy is abridged!
Maggie moves back home to Door County, Wisconsin, after her husband dies and her daughter has gone off to college. Things heat up quickly with her married high school sweetheart. The situation is further complicated when he asks his wife for a divorce. Maggie’s wonderful father is a rock when her mother and daughter shut her out.
The book is so much richer and believable in the unabridged version - this is the skipping stone copy.
I’m disappointed that only an abridged audio copy is available. I will always prefer an unabridged copy hands down. Period. I think there’s a special reserved spot in that hot place for those philistines and tools who belittle and chop up books.

The power of love

My friends and I read this MANY years ago when it first came out. Although we lived in various parts of the country, we converged on Door County and Egg Harbor for a “girls” weekend. That was the ULTIMATE reader’s club experience. We loved the book then and I have read its tattered covers many times since and have purchased copies for others. Saw it on Audible and purchased it and listened yet another time. I was not disappointed and neither will you be if you listen to this wonderful novel.

Memorable - all time favorite

I've read this book in paperback, several times. It is a favorite of mine. I was extremely disappointed with this edited version.

Quite Incomplete

I have read this book several times over the years, and was excited when I saw it on Audible. Unfortunately, the book was shortened, leaving out so many details. I finished listening, merely to see how much was left out. I would not recommend it. This was the first Audible book I have ever had this experience with.

Disappointed in this Rendition

I love this book, and this was an extremely watered down version. Very very disappointing.
