“Huh? Wait, what?”

“I asked you how long you and Kenneth been together.”

“Six months, but what I do? What I’m getting arrested for?”

“You’re about to get arrested for providing a false statement to a police officer. If Kenneth wants to take this to court, and you hop yo ass up on the stand and lie to a judge, you’re gonna get arrested again for perjury. You’re looking at a ten year sentence for someone you’ve only been with for six months. Think about that, and think about your kids, because I’m only going to ask you one time about the story you told the other detective. If you tell me the same lie you told him, you ain’t going home tonight. Do you understand me?”

She nodded. She was rattled, visibly shaking.

“Kenneth said he was with you the night Sydney was murdered,” Damien said. “Is that true?”

“Ye, yuh, yeah.”

“Alright, bet.” Damien made a show of closing his case file and rising from his seat.

Wait.” Her eyes grew large. She reached and grabbed his arm. “He was with me, but it was after. He came to my apartment after it happened.”

Damien’s expression did not reveal that he was surprised by this revelation. He sat back down.

“Alright. You just did yourself a world of good. How did you know Sydney had been killed when Kenneth came to your apartment that night?”

The witness began to cry. Damien waited, comforting her. It took several minutes before she spoke again.

During that time, he told her, “It’s alright… You need to get this out... I can see it’s eating you up… You need to do the right thing… I can tell you’re not a bad person… Just tell the truth… Do it for your kids…”

Finally, she gave him what he wanted.
