About this listen

Winner of the RNA Romantic Saga Award 2021

An inspiring and uplifting tale of women on the home front. For fans of Annie Groves and Nancy Revell.

On the ground, the crowd of men stood with their mouths agape, watching the wings soar into the air, the tail kept impressively steady and the small plane with a woman at the controls disappearing into the May sunshine.

It's 1942 and Bobby Hollis has joined the Air Transport Auxiliary in a team known as the 'glamour girls' - amazing women who pilot aircraft all around the country.

Bobby always wanted to escape life on the family farm and the ATA seemed like the perfect opportunity for her. But there's always something standing in her way. Like a demanding father, who wants to marry her off to a rich man. And the family secrets that threaten to engulf everything.

As Bobby navigates her way through life, and love, she has to learn that controlling a huge, four-engined bomber might just be easier than controlling her own life . . .

Woman of strength - wow!

This is the 2nd of Shirley Mann novels
One of the most enjoyable audio books I have listened to.
The insight into the female roles during g WWII was intriguing and for any history buff a sheer delight
I can’t wait to see when Hannah’s War is available on audio
You smile, shed a tear but just thoroughly become part of this story as the story unfolds
Excellent one I could hear again.

Couldn’t stop listening…!

Just couldn’t stop listening to this one. Great storyline and some historical facts I didn’t know about WW2. Also I really liked how this story overlaps with the author’s other novel ‘Lily’s War’. I hope there are more to make this a series…

A relatable woman, sugarconed story

An entertaining book to read and great insights into the life of a pilot. I love the fact that female characters are more and more relatable these days. It was lovely to fly accross Britain with Bobby. The book had some parts that weren't very believable though. Even if Bobby is very independent, the book concentrates quite a lot on family-related things. The ending of the book could have had a wider perspective to the time and society or something, but it was a silly emotional thing. The book is reaching to good feministic levels, but kind of ends up marrying off the female character in the end anyway. The reader is very good but I prefer a more serious and mature voice. I think this kind of soft, dreaming and excited tone is a good fit for Anne of Green Gables, but Bobby could have had something else. Although, the story too was a little too sugarconed for me as well. Bobby is such an interesting character and the athmosphere and depiction of the time are so good. The story has it's interesting parts too, but I feel this book could have been more and just ended up to be a little too naive to be a great book.
