Publisher's summary

Secrets are poison.

They eat away at you from the inside.

I doubt there’s a single person in the club that would have a problem with who I am.

Keeping my mouth shut is all about my own shame.

Who I am isn’t acceptable.

That’s what my Fundamentalist family raised me to believe, but even after leaving home, I couldn’t be myself.

Fighting against it never really became a struggle until the flirty bartender set his eyes on me.

He made me wish for things I couldn’t have.

Resisting him was easy until that first kiss.

Now there’s a very real chance my shame will ruin us both.

I could read so much more about these two!

I have loved getting to know Boomer in the books leading up to his story. His story of religious trauma is so poignant for many queer folks that I think it will resonate with many people. I just wish we had more of how their story unfolds but this is a classic marie James quick read with a good amount of spice and a sweet HEA. Can’t wait for Ugly’s book next!

My Thoughts on Boomer

This book hurt my heart at times with what Boomer had to go through. From the prologue my heart went out to him and seeing his struggle as the story unfolded just made me sad knowing that there are real people out there who go through those same struggles. People who had the same types of upbringing, or at least something similar, and some of them never get to be their true selves because of the self judgement and shame Boomer was experiencing. He was written with such depth and layers that he was a pretty likable guy. And then there was Drake. He was this fun, flirty, personable guy who had so many unexpected facets to him as well. Honestly, I’d probably have to say he was the character I most liked in this story.
There were definitely moments of frustration as the story went on. As much as I felt for Boomer, I also loved Drake and he was hurting due to some of Boomer’s actions or inaction. But all the worry and angst was well worth it since as usual Marie James made things right. Right up to that crazy ending that sets up the next book in the series. She dropped some breadcrumbs that gave me ideas of what’s going on, but I can’t wait to see the truth unfold.
Narration on this on was really good. I’m a huge fan of Aaron Shedlock so I already knew I’d like his performance. Alexander Cendese is more of newer voice for me. I have only heard him here and there over the last few years and for this particular story I would say I didn’t mind him for Drake. He was a lighter contrast for Aaron’s deeper voice. If I’m honest, I’m just not sure I loved him the way I loved Aaron’s performance.

Seriously, no

1.5 Stars

Honestly even to the very end Alex was the worst and this relationship is doomed. All I can think is poor drake, he traded in a physically abusive boyfriend for a mentally and emotionally abusive one… just yikes. If a man makes you cry and blame every issue on you that is not love.

I definitely need to give up on this author, I hate more of her book than I actually like.

Not the best in series...

out of 25 books on the series this one didn't hold my attention as much as others. if it weren't for the narration. I'd really not have enjoyed it..
