A Promising Start from a Consistently Strong Autho

I’ve really enjoyed Penelope Wright’s previous books, especially her gift for writing emotionally grounded characters who face hardship with integrity, grit, and kindness. Born of Ash and Fury continues that strength, though I’d say it’s the most traditional of her stories so far. The heroine’s situation—raised by a kind but addicted and incarcerated mother feels modern and authentic, which gives the story a real emotional core.

That said, the romantic subplot leans a bit too heavily on familiar tropes: the male lead is wealthy, powerful, and perfectly placed, which removes much of the tension. It’s the weakest part of an otherwise well-paced and engaging narrative.

While this isn’t my favorite of her books, I’m still very much enjoying it and will be continuing the series. If you’re new to Penelope Wright, don’t stop here, her other books explore wildly different storylines but keep the same emotionally honest main character. She’s absolutely a writer worth following.
