If you’re a fan of ghostly legends, haunted locations, or simply Britain’s mysterious folklore, Britain's Haunted Roads by Adrian Finney is a must-read. Finney has crafted an exceptionally detailed and atmospheric guide to some of the most infamous, haunted roads and areas across the British Isles, delivering each tale with skill, insight, and an impressive amount of historical research. This book offers much more than simple ghost stories; it’s a journey into Britain's past, its legends, and its eerie roadside folklore.
Finney's expertise and passion are evident in every chapter. He provides just enough background and history for each haunted road without overwhelming the reader. Each story is more tantalizing than the last, with spine-tingling details that make you question what you would do if you found yourself alone on a foggy British road after dark. The narratives reveal the tales of mysterious hitchhikers, and restless spirits, all of which are backed by historical records, local lore, and sometimes, firsthand accounts from those who claim to have seen the supernatural.
Narrator Peter McGiffen brings each tale to life with remarkable depth and presence. His tone is perfectly suited to the dark subject matter, adding that extra edge that truly makes this audiobook a haunting experience. McGiffen’s narration draws you in, creating a sense of eerie intimacy that transports you directly to each road, bridge, or forest haunted by these unsettled spirits. His pacing is impeccable, allowing listeners to savour the suspense and chill of each account.
What sets this book apart is its balance of solid research and storytelling. Finney doesn’t rely on cheap scares or sensationalism; instead, he gives each tale a carefully constructed narrative that builds on real history, letting the hauntings speak for themselves. Finney’s exploration of these haunted roads reflects his commitment to honouring the history and mystery behind these tales, making it feel as though he’s giving readers a privileged glimpse into Britain’s lesser-known, spectral corners.
Britain's Haunted Roads is perfect for ghost story enthusiasts, history lovers, or anyone curious about the shadowy side of the British countryside. Whether you're planning to visit these haunted locations or just looking for a thrilling armchair journey, this audiobook will make you think twice about any midnight road trip plans. Finney and McGiffen make a masterful team, weaving tales that will haunt you long after the final chapter. This book has certainly earned its five stars – a hauntingly delightful journey through Britain’s darkest and most mysterious byways.

This collection of short tales are very entertaining and give me ideas for where to visit and which places to avoid in Britain. I particularly want to visit the ghost of the gentlemanly highwayman with a sense of humor. Other chilling stories of ghostly apparitions causing vehicle collisions make me want to avoid those particular roads. There are actually two different phantom buses and two different headless horsemen in Britain! Fascinating stuff.
The narrator Peter McGiffen did a remarkably wonderful job. He has a lovely English accent with great enunciation and a pleasant rumbling in my ear like a purring tiger. He was also really good at assorted accents during the ghost stories that had dialogue from ghosts or witnesses. He has great pacing too.
I requested and received a free audiobook copy, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
